German MEP Markus Bukhait has addressed the European Commission (EC) with a number of questions about the EU’s approach to cooperation with the Chinese company Huawei. This was announced on Wednesday, May 5, RT reports.

As the parliamentarian notes, while some EU countries “do not worry about Huawei” in the development of 5G networks, others deprive the company of the opportunity to compete with competitors in this market in order to “thwart Chinese espionage.”

How, then, Buchait wonders, the European Commission sees future interaction in the field of security, namely the exchange of data, with countries that refuse to work with Huawei and those EU states that continue to insist on using the company’s technologies.

In addition, the deputy asked how the EC is going to protect those Union states that refuse Huawei technologies from possible sanctions from China, as well as how they plan to support high-tech European enterprises against the background of the expansion of the use of fifth-generation networks.

On July 14, 2020, the British Minister for Digital Technology, Culture, Media and Sports, Oliver Dowden, confirmed the information about the country’s refusal to use the equipment of the Chinese company Huawei in the national communications infrastructure. Authorities speculate that the equipment could be used by China for espionage or to destroy the UK’s national infrastructure.

In May 2019, the US Department of Commerce blacklisted Huawei. Companies were banned from purchasing technology and components from American manufacturers and from doing business with the United States without the permission of the United States authorities. Washington urged its allies to ditch Huawei equipment.
