The Chumakov Federal Research and Development Center for Immunobiological Preparations of the Russian Academy of Sciences will apply for registration of a vaccine against COVID-19 at the beginning of 2021. This was announced on December 22 by the deputy general director of the center Konstantin Chernov.
“We are going to apply (documents) for vaccine registration in late January – early February. <...> And in parallel with this, we will launch the third phase (testing of the vaccine) in order to register it not according to the temporary 441 government decree, but according to the permanent 61 federal laws, “he said on the air of the Russia 24 TV channel.
Chernov also said that it was decided to double the number of test participants and involve research centers in Yekaterinburg in this work. He noted that the publication of test results may be delayed by two to three weeks because of this.
The Chumakov Center has developed the so-called whole-virion vaccine – it is based on the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, which has been specially processed so that it has lost its infectious properties, but at the same time retains the ability to induce an immune response.
On October 19, Airat Ishmukhametov said that a coronavirus vaccine from the Chumakov Federal Research and Development Center for Immunobiological Preparations could be registered in December. Then it became known that vaccine trials had begun in Kirov.
On October 16, the head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Russia Denis Manturov said that the production of the third vaccine against coronavirus in Russia could begin in 2021.
