Popova commented on the data on overweight Russians

At least every fourth resident of Russia and almost every fifth Russian is obese. The head of Rospotrebnadzor Anna Popova told about this.

“In the country as a whole, overweight is observed in 47.6% of men and 35.6% of women, obesity – in 19% and 27.6% of men and women, respectively,” she said in an interview with the portal “Healthy Nutrition” published October 16.

According to Popova, most obese people are observed in Oryol, Kurgan, Voronezh, Kemerovo, Kursk, Bryansk, Tula, Jewish Autonomous regions, as well as in the Republic of Altai and Altai Territory.

Popova explained that being overweight can lead to heart problems, hypertension and diabetes. In addition, such people are at risk of complications from the coronavirus.

On October 15, Evgeny Shlyakhto, Director General of the Almazov National Medical Research Center, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, said that overweight and diabetes increase the risk of death in COVID-19.
