Magnitude 6.4 earthquake in Argentina, no casualties reported

An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 struck western and central Argentina on Monday, raising public alarm, but without immediate reports of casualties or significant damage, according to the ‘National Institute for Seismic Prevention.

The earthquake occurred Monday at 11:46 p.m. local time, with the locality of Pocitos in the province of San Juan as its epicenter, about 1000 km from Buenos Aires, not far from the Chilean border, according to the American Institute of Geophysics ( USGS).

It occurred at a depth of 20 km.

Some towns in the province of San Juan were temporarily deprived of electricity following the earthquake.

It was also felt in the provinces of Mendoza, Cordoba, Santa Fe, La Rioja and Buenos Aires.
