How many people in Germany can meet on Christmas and New Year’s Eve

In November, Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel and 16 prime ministers of the federal states agreed to ease the restrictive measures between Christmas and New Years. It was planned that up to 10 people from ten different households could meet. Due to the consistently high number of infected people, these agreements are canceled. Small concessions are valid from 24 to 26 December and only for relatives.

During this Christmas vacation, five people from the nearest family circle and their children under 14 years old will be able to get together. Moreover, these five can be from three or more households. However, each federal state can, at its discretion, depending on the sanitary and epidemiological situation in the region, tighten this rule.

According to the decision of the authorities, the closest family circle includes spouses, partners living in a common-law marriage and partners living together for a long period of time, as well as direct relatives: brothers and sisters and their family members.

These exemptions do not apply on New Year’s Eve. On these days, only five people from a maximum of two households are allowed to meet. It should be added that some lands have tightened these requirements. So, in Bavaria, a curfew is introduced from Wednesday. It will be possible to go outside in the evenings only for a good reason, like returning from work or a walk with a pet.
