The European Union authorities will introduce targeted sanctions against those Belarusian officials, politicians and leaders who either participated in rigging the elections or are responsible for repressions against the protesters of the republic’s citizens.

“So far, I can not give the exact number – somewhere between 15 and 20 people,” a senior EU source explained to reporters, talking about the agenda of the informal “Gymnich” meeting of foreign ministers of the Union countries, which will be held in Berlin on August 27-28.

The source added that quality evidence must be collected to impose sanctions, otherwise the sanctions can be challenged in the EU Court of Justice in Luxembourg.
