Community organization More Than a Vote, co-founded by NBA superstar LeBron James, has announced a $ 100,000 contribution to help register convicts on the Florida voter lists for the November elections.
The money will be used to pay debts and legal costs for criminals who have served their sentences.
This year, the Republican-majority state legislature approved a bill that requires all court debts to be paid for registration on the voter lists. The attempt to repeal the law was rejected by the country’s Supreme Court, and the Florida Court of Appeals is now due to hear the case on August 18, the day of the state’s primary.
The money will be managed by the Florida Coalition to Restore Voting Rights, which has already raised $ 1.5 million for this purpose. A contested law will strip 775,000 Florida residents from registration to vote.
