A criminal case was initiated on the fact of an accident in which a woman pedestrian died. This was reported on August 26 by the press service of the Russian MIA Administration for the Smolensk Region.

On August 25, at about half past ten in the morning, in Smolensk, on Dzerzhinsky Street, a 43-year-old Volkswagen Tuareg driver hit an elderly 73-year-old woman who was crossing the carriageway at an unregulated pedestrian crossing. As a result, she died at the scene from her injuries. The driver is certified – sober.

Department No. 1 of the Investigative Directorate of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs for the city of Smolensk opened a criminal case on the grounds of a crime under part 3 of Article 264 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation “Violation of traffic rules and operation of vehicles.” The sanction of this part of the article provides for the maximum punishment in the form of imprisonment for up to five years.
