Tourism companies some of the hardest hit by the coronavirus pandemic. German youth hostels reported continued huge losses during the lightweight lockdown.

“At the moment, we assume that this year the number of guests will decrease by 80 percent,” Justin Blum, spokesman for the German Youth Hostel Association, told Tagesspiegel. Approximately 450 hostels are affected by the cancellation of school travel, as well as bans on the reception of guests who have booked for tourist purposes.

The Federal Statistical Office reported a sharp drop in the number of guests in June. According to the available information, last year the youth hostels received about ten million guests, which meant an annual turnover of about 385 million euros. The youth hostels association expects sales to decline by two-thirds this year.
