A global “reset” is a priority for 2021 after a previous year full of “tragedy and danger”. This was announced on Thursday, January 28, by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres.

“2020 has become a global annus horribilis (terrible year – Lat.) – a year of death, disaster and despair. 2021 should be the year when it will be necessary to change the mechanism and set the world on the right track. We need to move from death to health, from disaster to recovery, from despair to hope, from business as usual to transformation, ”Guterres said as quoted by the Business Recorder.

He noted that 2020 brought tragedy, death and danger, but 2021 could be a period of opportunity and hope.

“You can build the world we want,” Guterres said.

He stressed that the pandemic has claimed the lives of more than 2 million people and at the moment it is important to ensure access to the coronavirus vaccine, Dinheiro Vivo website reports.

Earlier in the day, Guterres said the Russian vaccine could play a very important role in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. According to him, it can be used to vaccinate UN mission staff and the population of various countries.

On January 26, the UN Secretary General noted that as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, the world entered the worst economic crisis in the last century. According to him, the pandemic has exposed such global problems as inequality between people and countries, the instability of “climate and biodiversity crises.”

In addition, Guterres pointed out that the delay in the spread of vaccines, as well as the mutation of the coronavirus, could lead to more deaths from the infection caused by the COVID-19 disease.
