Ukraine’s Ambassador to Berlin Andriy Melnyk commented on the interview of the candidate for Chancellor of Germany Annalena Berbock, in which she answered the questions of Ukraine’s NATO membership and the supply of defensive weapons, and noted that Kiev should discard the illusions of a change in the FRG’s policy and rely only on its own forces. He announced this on Saturday, April 24, on his page in Twitter…
“Unfortunately, we can observe a refusal both on the issue of providing Kiev with defensive weapons, and on the country’s membership in NATO. It is sad. Therefore, it is high time for us to cast aside the illusion of a change in Berlin’s policy after the election of a new chancellor and rely only on our own forces, ”the representative of Ukrainian interests said in a statement.
In an interview with Frankfurter Allgemeine, Annalena Berbock said that Ukraine’s steps towards NATO membership were unrealistic in advance, and the question of the supply of weapons to the country from the FRG, if it becomes chancellor, remained without comment.
Soyuz 90 / Greens co-chair Annalena Barbock was selected as a candidate for German chancellor for future elections to the Bundestag, as it became known on 18 April. The final approval of her candidacy is scheduled for June 11-13 at the federal congress of the Greens.
Earlier, on April 18, the Ukrainian ambassador to Germany, Andriy Melnyk, appealed to Germany with a request to achieve Ukraine’s accession to NATO as soon as possible and without conditions. He noted that Germany, “as a country that bears special historical responsibility for Nazi crimes against the Ukrainian people,” must realize Ukraine’s membership in the alliance.
