The reason for the explosion of the gas pipeline in the suburbs of Damascus is tentatively considered a terrorist attack, said the Syrian Minister of Oil and Mineral Resources Ali Ghanim.

On 24 August, a massive explosion occurred on the gas pipeline between the Al Damir and Adrah areas in rural Damascus. According to Ghanim, the whole country was left without electricity, writes SANA

“The highway supplying the southern region exploded. The explosion could have been caused by a terrorist attack, ”the minister said.

Ghanim noted that specialists are currently working on the restoration of power supply.

The gas pipeline fed the entire southern region of the country. Details of the incident are being specified, data on the victims and destruction have not yet been received.

Since 2011, an armed conflict has continued in Syria. To date, the main terrorist group of the Islamic State (IS, banned in the Russian Federation) has been defeated. In some parts of the country, illegal armed groups and militant groups still operate and regularly attempt to attack government forces.

On August 6, the Russian Ministry of Defense noted the aggravation of the situation in the regions of the Deir ez-Zor province not controlled by the government of the Syrian Arab Republic.
