State Duma Deputy Mikhail Sheremet said that Crimea is the legal territory of Russia, and there can be no compromise with the Ukrainian authorities on this issue. This is how the parliamentarian commented on the statement of the first President of Ukraine Leonid Kravchuk that Moscow and Kiev need to arrange negotiations on the peninsula in order to resolve the contradictions between the states.
According to Sheremet, this was a purely political statement, “absolutely not connected with reality.”
“No compromise on Crimea is possible. This is out of the question. The status of the peninsula is unambiguous – it is the legal territory of Russia, and there is no other way than to recognize it, ”the deputy said in an interview with RIA Novosti.
He added that the settlement of all problems between Russia and Ukraine should begin with the recognition of the last “choice of the Crimeans to return to their historical homeland in 2014”.
Sheremet recalled that the reunification of Crimea with Russia took place within the framework of international and Ukrainian laws.
“The Crimeans have not violated anything, we have nothing to blush or make excuses for. Let Ukraine just leave Crimea alone. The Kiev authorities have always looked at the peninsula from the point of view of robbing and robbing. It has never been a native and close region for Ukraine. Crimea was of interest to them only in terms of land trade, ”said the deputy.
Crimea became part of Russia following a referendum in 2014. 96.77% of the inhabitants of the peninsula and 95.6% of the voters of Sevastopol supported joining the Russian Federation. The procedure was carried out in strict accordance with international law.
Kiev does not recognize the voting results and is making plans to “return” the peninsula. Moscow regularly points out that the referendum was held in compliance with all international norms, and the question of ownership of the region is closed forever.
