First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs Dmitry Novikov commented on the statement of the head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, that the EU should maintain a dialogue with Russia. The parliamentarian spoke on this topic in a conversation with RT on Thursday, February 4.
“In Borrell’s statements one can feel the position of a realist who understands that with all the globalization on a de facto imperialist basis, which has been carried out in the world over the past decades, led by the United States, very important centers of power remain in the world,” Novikov said.
He noted that in this case, the head of EU diplomacy is trying to be a politician who logically takes into account all points of view existing in the EU. According to Novikov, there are those who advocate an independent role for the European Union in world politics.
“Behind Borrell’s statements, there is an important tendency within European politics, whose representatives would like to raise the role of the European Union, and for this they consider it important, in particular, to improve relations with Russia,” he summed up.
Earlier on the same day, Borell’s statement was published, which said that the European Union must maintain a dialogue with Russia if it wants to become a global player. As the head of EU diplomacy noted, Russia “remains a neighbor and a key partner.”
On January 31, the Minister for European Affairs at the German Foreign Ministry, Michael Roth, said about the importance of dialogue with Russia, since many international problems can be overcome only on condition of cooperation with Moscow.
At the same time, the press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov noted that Moscow regrets that Europe thoughtlessly and unreasonably “throws into the trash” the potential of relations. He stressed that many problems can only be resolved together, but the statements that come from the EU do not like the Russian side.
