The Prosecutor General’s Office made a rating of the regions in terms of corruption

In 2020, Moscow became the leader in corruption crimes. This was reported on March 9 at the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation.

Among the Russian regions on the list were Tatarstan, Stavropol Territory, Moscow Region and Bashkortostan, RIA Novosti reports.

According to Viktor Baldin, head of the department for overseeing the implementation of anti-corruption legislation of the Prosecutor General’s Office, many such crimes were recorded in the Krasnodar Territory, the Chelyabinsk and Rostov Regions, Dagestan and the Perm Territory.

He emphasized that statistics indicate, first of all, the activity of law enforcement agencies in the subjects to identify violations.

Chukotka, the Jewish Autonomous Region, Mari El, Adygea, Ingushetia, Tuva, Khakassia, Murmansk, Kostroma and Magadan regions were named among the regions with the lowest number of corruption crimes at the end of 2020.

In 2020, 8,000 convictions were handed down on corruption charges against 9,000 people. Of these, about 18% of the convicts were sentenced to a real term of imprisonment, 35% received a suspended sentence, 40% were punished with a fine, Gazeta.ru writes.

At the end of 2020, the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation Igor Krasnov proposed to toughen the punishment against petty corrupt officials. At the moment, corrupt officials who have committed crimes of small and medium gravity are assigned a court fine.

Also, the department reported that it is planned to strengthen control over the recovery of damage from corrupt officials.
