The English Premier League (Premier League) opposed the creation of a club Super League in European football. The corresponding statement was published on April 19 on the official website of the Premier League.
“This is contrary to the principles of open competition and the sporting principles that were originally laid down in the foundation of football. Fans of all European and English clubs dream that their team will become the first and play with the giants, but the Super League is destroying their dreams, ”the message says.
The Premier League has also announced its intention, together with other stakeholders, to protect the integrity and prospects of English football.
The creation of the football Superleague became known the day before. The tournament is a planned annual competition in which a selected group of leading European clubs will participate. Founded by twelve clubs, three more are expected to join. As a result, 15 clubs will become permanent members of the Super League, and five more will be able to apply for participation in it annually.
The announcement was made on the eve of a meeting of the UEFA Executive Committee, which planned to update the format and expand the UEFA Champions League from the 2024/25 season. The announcement of the creation of a new tournament caused a negative reaction from UEFA and a number of football associations in England, Italy and Spain – clubs from these countries were the founders of the Super League.
As follows from the message, clubs that have joined the Super League will be banned from playing in other competitions at the European, national or world level. The players of these teams will also not be able to defend the colors of their national teams.
The head of the Super League was the president of Real Madrid Florentino Perez, the vice-president of the tournament was the president of Juventus Andrea Agnelli. Super League matches will be played in the middle of the week.
