In the heart of the French wine-growing region of Burgundy, there is the most mysterious tourist find – the seemingly bottomless pit of Foss Dion, in the city of Tonneur.

The karst spring has been known since Roman times and was then used for drinking. Later, according to the French tradition, a white stone masonry with a drain was erected around it, intended for washing. Louis d’Eon built a strip room on this site in 1758.

“Overflowing in spring” the spring has a rich blue hue and goes so deep that it was called bottomless by the locals. Due to the narrowness of the inner walls, the source poses a danger to divers’ exploration. After several tragic deaths while diving for artifacts, diving in Foss Dion became available only with the permission of the Mayor of Tonner.
