Health Minister Mikhail Murashko said on Monday, September 7, that the figures on mortality from COVID-19 provided by the head of Roszdravnadzor Alla Samoilova were obtained during inspections of individual hospitals, and not based on an analysis of data across the country. This was reported by RIA Novosti.

“The data announced by the head of Roszdravnadzor, Alla Samoilova, regarding the peculiarities of coding the causes of death, are not based on an analysis of statistical data on the country, but were obtained during inspections of individual medical organizations. Such analysis is within the competence of the Ministry of Health of Russia and Rosstat, ”said Murashko.

According to the head of the Ministry of Health, the duty of Roszdravnadzor is to issue instructions on violations and monitor their elimination if such facts appear.

The Minister noted that the registration and determination of the causes of death are carried out in accordance with the requirements of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases, and also stressed the importance of the reliability of medical statistics.

As the head of the medical department noted, the increase in mortality among the population during the COVID-19 pandemic is associated “both directly with coronavirus infection and with the decompensation of other diseases” such as diabetes mellitus, cancer, circulatory diseases, since the virus contributes to their more severe downstream.

Earlier on the same day, “Medical Bulletin”, citing Samoilova, reported that due to discrepancies in the registration of deaths of patients, inaccuracies in the final figures were found.

In Russia over the past day, 5185 cases of coronavirus infection were detected. During the day, 51 deaths were recorded, 2328 patients recovered. According to the published data, the daily growth of 23 days does not exceed 0.5%.

In total, over the entire period of the disease in Russia, 1,030,690 cases of COVID-19 were detected in 85 regions. 17 871 deaths were registered, 843 277 people recovered.
