The Russian Defense Ministry has decided to modernize the country’s easternmost military airfield, Elizovo, which is located near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Izvestia sources in the military department say.
According to military expert Dmitry Boltenkov, Yelizovo is the only continuously functioning military airfield in the east of the country. The 317th mixed air regiment is based there, at its disposal fighters, transport and anti-submarine aircraft, drones and helicopters of various types.
“Yelizovo is considered a co-based airport, where civilian planes and aviation of the Federal Security Service also fly, providing communication with Kamchatka. This is one of the most important facilities in the region, ”he added.
According to the approved plan, special concrete shelters for aircraft will be built there, communications, navigation and landing systems will be updated.
Modernization work started this spring. At the same time, the exact date of their completion is not called.
