The host of the military program “Arsenal” on the state TV channel “Belarus 1” Vladimir Burko announced his resignation against the background of the situation in the republic. The corresponding post was published by Burko on Instagram.

The journalist called on the security officials, who are harshly suppressing protest actions in the country, to think better “before it is too late.”

“For five years I was secretly the media person of the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Belarus … I would never, even in my worst dream, think that the soldiers and equipment I was talking about could be used against my people,” Burko said.

Earlier, on August 12, several more Belarusian TV presenters announced their decision to resign from state channels in connection with the protests in the country.

Mass protests have been taking place in Belarus since August 9, on that day, presidential elections were held in the country. The incumbent head of state Alexander Lukashenko, according to the CEC, received 80.08% of the vote, opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanovskaya was supported by 10.09% of voters. Tikhanovskaya’s headquarters did not recognize the results of the vote.

After that, people who disagreed with the election results began to take to the streets. They are opposed by the security forces. In the clashes, there are casualties on both sides.
