April 1, 2018 – the so-called Fools’ Day – Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, posted a comic tweet on the social network, in which he poses next to the Tesla Model 3 electric car produced by the company and portrays himself as allegedly “having gone through” Teslakila (according to analogies with the popular Mexican vodka tequila).
But that didn’t seem to be such a joke. In any case, Musk, as it turned out, took the idea of teslakila very seriously. The company recently unveiled the first batch of its own branded tequila, called “Tesla Tequila”. The company’s statement describes the alcoholic beverage as “an exclusive, small-batch, high-quality 100% agave tequila, made from high and low agave agaves and aged for 15 months in French oak barrels.”
But a tequila bottle made in the shape of a lightning bolt and bearing the word “Tesla” on the front wall will not be easy to acquire. And it’s not just the price – $ 250 per bottle. First, so far Teslakila will only go on sale in a few states, including New York, California and Washington. And, secondly, the company’s website says that almost the entire first batch of the drink has already been sold out and those wishing to buy Teslakila can place a preliminary order on the website. And those who manage to buy Teslakila put up empty bottles for sale – sometimes at a price that exceeds the original cost of a full bottle.
Mexican companies that manufacture the original tequila are threatening to sue Tesla for copyright infringement, so the future of Teslakila remains in question. And it’s entirely possible that her bottles – both full and empty – will become collectibles.
