Earlier on Friday, Izvestia reported about the shelling of Stepanakert. Sirens sounded over the city, about 10 shells were fired around the city. The shelling went on for about half an hour.

Earlier that day, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said that Baku took control of a number of settlements in the Khojavend, Jabrail and Gubadli regions of the unrecognized republic of Nagorno-Karabakh.

Also on Friday, the President of the unrecognized NKR Arayik Harutyunyan appealed to Russian President Vladimir Putin with a request to do everything possible to end hostilities in the conflict zone.

The conflict over Karabakh between Armenia and Azerbaijan began in 1988 due to the decision of the autonomy to leave the Azerbaijan SSR. Baku lost control over the region, inhabited mainly by Armenians, during the military confrontation of 1992-1994, but still considers the territory its own. At the same time, Yerevan did not recognize Karabakh as an independent state.
