Moscow | Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated Joe Biden on his election to the American presidency on Tuesday and said he wanted to work with him, despite the deleterious relations between the two countries.

“For my part, I am ready for collaboration and contacts with you”, he wrote in a telegram, according to a statement from the Kremlin.

The Russian president is one of the few leaders to have waited for the vote of the American electoral college in favor of Mr. Biden to congratulate him, explaining this refusal by the uncertainty weighing on the result of the ballot of November 4 given the refusal of Donald Trump to recognize his defeat and his multiple legal remedies.

“V. Putin wished the president-elect success and expressed his conviction that Russia and the United States (…) can, despite their disagreements, solve many problems and challenges “in the world, the Kremlin added in its statement.

Mr. Biden has promised to stand firm against Russia, accused in particular of interference in the American electoral system to promote the election of Mr. Trump in 2016.

The American billionaire has always denied having benefited from Russian efforts, just like Mr. Putin, despite the conclusions of American investigators which led to heavy sanctions against Russia.
