BEIJING | The Chinese Embassy in London has called on Twitter to investigate after what it describes as the hacking of the official account of its ambassador, who “liked” a pornographic video.

The short clip was present Wednesday for more than an hour in the section of publications “loved” by Liu Xiaoming, drawing a flood of amused reactions from Internet users.

“Some anti-China activists, showing malice, have targeted the ambassador’s Twitter account (…) using despicable methods in order to usurp” his identity, the embassy said.

“We condemn this action with the greatest firmness. We reported the incident to Twitter and we reserve the right to take further action, ”she said in a statement released Wednesday London time.

“We call on Twitter to conduct a careful investigation, to take this matter very seriously, hoping that Internet users will not believe this false information and will not spread it. “

Contacted by AFP, a spokesperson for the American social network refused to react to the words of the Chinese embassy.

Liu Xiaoming is one of the most direct Chinese diplomats. He does not hesitate to grant interviews to the foreign press in order to defend the positions of his government.

Twitter is blocked in China and pornography is banned there.

But many diplomats and state media journalists have opened social media accounts in recent years to publish their views.

Liu Xiaoming created his Twitter account in October 2019. He currently has over 85,000 followers.
