Peru crossed the barrier of 400,000 cases of coronavirus contamination on Wednesday and recorded 204 additional deaths in 24 hours, the Ministry of Health announced.

The number of cases of covid-19 in the country now stands at 400,683 after the 5,678 new infections recorded in one day, the ministry said. This is the largest daily increase since June 12.

Since the start of the epidemic, 18,816 people have died in connection with this virus in Peru, including 204 in the past 24 hours – a figure that approaches the peak of June 11 when 206 new deaths had been recorded.

After a 100-day national population containment, Peru began deconfinement on July 1 in 18 out of 25 regions, including that of the capital Lima.

With 33 million inhabitants, the country is the third Latin American state with the most cases of contamination and deaths linked to covid-19 behind Brazil and Mexico.
