The United States of America calls on Iran to de-escalate tensions at sea. This statement was made by Pentagon spokesman John Kirby, commenting on the incident on April 2, when the boats of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC, elite units of the Armed Forces) of Iran allegedly surrounded two US Coast Guard ships in the Persian Gulf.
“We don’t want to see miscalculations,” he added.
According to him, “the IRGC’s unsafe and unprofessional activities at sea” have already become commonplace.
“This has been an ongoing problem for a long time. We do not see the same behavior from the Iranian Navy. It is mainly the IRGC and usually their small speedboats. This continues to cause concern,” added a Pentagon spokesman, stressing that such actions increases the chances of a miscalculation that will not benefit anyone.
Note that the briefing took place before the incident in the Persian Gulf, during which the US Navy patrol ship Firebolt fired warning shots due to the approach of the IRGC fast boats.
