Tropical Storm Epsilon forecast to become hurricane, pass near Bermuda

0

The latest tropical storm is expected to become a hurricane by the time it gets closer to Bermuda later this week, with forecasters saying the island could feel some impacts.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) said as of 2 p.m. EDT that Tropical Storm Epsilon is packing maximum sustained winds of 60 mph and is located about 675 miles southeast of Bermuda, moving east-north-northwest at 12 mph.

Epsilon formed on Monday, becoming the 26th named storm of the busy 2020 Atlantic hurricane season.

According to the NHC, the storm is expected to make a turn toward the north and northwest later on Tuesday, with a general northwestern motion expected through Thursday.

Gradual strengthening is also expected over the next couple of days, and Epsilon is forecast to be at or near hurricane strength by Wednesday night or Thursday morning.

The storm will then approach Bermuda on Thursday, but it’s still too early to tell what impacts the storm will have.

Current forecast tracks show Epsilon will just brush Bermuda later this week, but the island could still be impacted by tropical storm conditions. At this point, Bermuda will likely only see tropical storm conditions with the worst staying east of the island, but a track closer to Bermuda would increase impacts.

‘BUBBLE CURTAIN’ IS THE NEWEST CRAZY HURRICANE-KILLING IDEA

“Interests in Bermuda should monitor the progress of Epsilon,” the NHC said.

A tropical storm watch has been issued for the island, with tropical-storm force conditions expected to arrive within 48 hours.

Tropical storm-force winds extend outward up to 300 miles from the center of the storm, and Epsilon is generating large swells that will impact Bermuda over the next couple of days.

Epsilon represents a record for the earliest 26th named storm, beating out Nov. 22 in 2005, according to Colorado State University hurricane researcher Phil Klotzbach.

There is just over one month left in the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season, which ends Nov. 30, but this season has broken numerous records as forecasters in September ran out of traditional names and went to the Greek alphabet for storms Alpha and Beta. Delta became a Category 4 storm before weakening and swiping Mexico, then took aim and roared into Louisiana as a Category 2 hurricane.

NOAA forecasters had called for up to 25 named storms this season with winds of 39 mph or higher; of those, seven to 10 could become hurricanes. Among those hurricanes, three to six will be major, classified as Category 3, 4 and 5 with winds of 111 mph or higher.

Microphones cut during Trump / Biden debate to avoid cacophony

0

WASHINGTON | Donald Trump and Joe Biden’s microphones will be cut when they do not have the floor, during their debate on Thursday, to avoid the cacophony that reigned during the first debate between the two presidential candidates in September, announced Monday the American commission responsible for these debates.

Democratic candidate Joe Biden, like US President and Republican candidate Donald Trump, will have two minutes to answer questions from the debate moderator, and during that time, the microphone of whoever is supposed to listen will be muted.

Once both candidates have used these two minutes, an open discussion will then be possible, this time with both microphones open.

“It is the wish of the commission that the candidates be respectful of their respective speaking time, which will advance the public debate for the benefit of the spectators”, indicated the commission in a statement.

But Donald Trump’s campaign manager Bill Stepien reacted strongly to this decision.

“President Trump is eager to debate Joe Biden, whatever last minute changes decided by a biased committee, in a last ditch attempt to provide an advantage to his favorite candidate,” he said in a statement.

According to Mr. Stepien, President Trump intends to discuss the affairs of Hunter Biden, son of Joe Biden, as he now does regularly, two weeks before the election.

“If the media doesn’t ask Joe Biden these questions, the president will, and there will be no escape for Biden,” Stepien said.

During their first debate in September, Mr. Trump interrupted his Democratic rival 71 times, the latter only interrupting him 22 times, according to the Axios news site.

The two candidates were scheduled to debate again last Thursday, but the committee imposed a virtual debate after the president tested positive for the coronavirus, a format that was immediately rejected by Mr. Trump. The two men then held separate meetings which were broadcast on television.

The debate scheduled for Thursday will be the last between the two men before the election on November 3.

 Reddit’s history, evolution, and technicalities.

Reddit is a  social news aggregator, that is to say, a mix between a discussion platform and a linked broadcaster, which is divided into forums, the “subreddits”. Users, editors, are content creators, readers, and curators at the same time. Using a scoring system of Upvotes (upvotes) and Downvotes (downvotes), the community determines what content and discussions are important and therefore show up at the top of the feed. The platform is largely self-managed, the moderators act as moderators of the forum.

According to Similar Web surveys, nearly 40% of Reddit users are from the United States. The other Anglo-Saxon countries complete the top ranking. / Source: https://www.similarweb.com/website/reddit.com

Indeed, Reddit is especially popular in the United States, where its influence is far from negligible since nearly 40% of Reddit users live there. But a French and francophone community is slowly developing. In French, we call Reddit users “Redditors”.

Perhaps the increasingly negative media coverage of Facebook as a result of the recent private data scandals and the ensuing leak of Facebook users is an opportunity for other social networks like Reddit. But what exactly is Reddit?

 Reddit’s history, evolution, and technicalities.

What is Reddit? Basic idea and evolution:-

Reddit describes itself as “The Front Page of The Internet ”. The network functions like the cover page of a printed newspaper, where readers find the topics of the day that the editorial staff considers to be the most important or topical. Even if the network in France is dragging a bit to really win this place, Reddit does have the potential. In fact, the number of subreddits has increased in ten years, from nearly 11,000 (2008) to around  1.64 million  (September 2019) of subreddits.

Buy Reddit account collects social news in an almost countless number of forums, these are the subreddits. These are created by users (editors) and filled with content. The idea of the forum, as used in ancient Roman times, can be seen as the basis of the perception of the website. The Forum Romanum, for example, was not only a central place where people visited temples and attended public trials, but it was above all a  place of intellectual exchange.

Modern Internet forums have developed using the 1980s bulletin boards as a model. A forum usually deals with one main topic and divides it into subtopics. There are directories,  sub-forums, for Reddit these are subreddits. In a sub-forum, users create new posts (messages) on a specific topic. These can be questions and requests for help, but also informative articles, photos, and videos. Humorous and creative contributions as well as controversial discussion topics are common.

A quick history of Reddit:-

Reddit refers us to  Alexis Ohanian and  Steve Huffman. The two met at the University of Virginia. Soon after graduation, they wanted to develop a site called “MyMobileMenu” with the help of start-up investors,  Y Combinator. The idea was rejected, but the process was launched. A little later, they thus received seed capital from the same company for the “Reddit – The Title Page of the Internet” project. Physicist  Christopher Slowe and internet activist  Aaron Swartz with his company Infogami have joined the development team.

Despite personal setbacks, the young founders continued to work on the project. Condé Nast Publications bought the company and shortly thereafter fired Aaron Schwartz. The other founders also took other paths after the end of their contract, they notably met for the online travel start-up project Hipmunk.

While initially developers still used fictitious accounts to boost activity on the site, Reddit already had 10,926 subreddits in 2008. In  2011, the number grew to 60,191, Reddit stepped out of the shadows of Condé Nast and became independent under its parent company, Advance Publications. A year earlier, the platform launched the Reddit Premium subscription model.  For around $ 6 per month, Premium Editors have access to the “Lounge,” a restricted subreddit, as well as more functionality on the user interface.

The company and its founders attracted a lot of attention when in 2012 they campaigned in the United States against the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and, along with popular websites such as Wikipedia, put it out. line their entire domain with a Blackout in opposition and protest.

Site administrators are always committed to protecting the freedom of expression and anonymity of their users. This is expressed both in the site guidelines and in the Reddiquette (Reddit etiquette and rules). The annual transparency reports published since 2014 precisely guarantee transparency.

In 2015, Steve Huffman, a founding member, became CEO again. At that time, Reddit employed a hundred people; in 2017, the company had 230 and at that time the majority of users were American. However, there is a small but active Francophone community. This notably made it possible to make the most important official documents like the Reddiquette and a large part of the user interface in French. In addition, Reddiquette is available in seven other languages and the user interface is available in almost 90 different languages or dialects.

Reddit technical basics:-

Originally the site was written in Common Lisp, but before its release, the development team decided to switch it to  Python.  The   web.py web framework, which Swartz had built for Reddit and which is now available as open-source software, has also been replaced. The successor is now  Pylons. From 2008 to September 2017, the source code for Reddit was officially available as an open-source code on GitHub. However, by its own statements, the company had strayed so far from its chaotic beginnings that, for example, the prolonged development of public codes now hampered the launch of new products… Nonetheless, Reddit continues to use open source tools, which is in line with company policy.

In 2009, Reddit migrated to the Amazon Web Services Cloud, and since 2012 Amazon CloudSearch has been responsible for internal search. For the cloud database,  the free NoSQL Apache Cassandra database management system is used more and more.

RabbitMQ open source software is message-oriented middleware and supports Reddit offline processes.

The official Reddit app is available for Android and iOS. As they are not very popular within the community, some competitors have therefore established themselves, including Boost, Relay, BaconReader, and Sync. For tablets that run on Android, there is Reddit. Even for desktop PCs, there is an (unofficial) app that works on multiple platforms: Reddit.

Twitter suspends fake Trump supporter accounts

Donald Trump is campaigning for the 3 November election

Twitter has suspended a number of fake accounts purporting to be owned by black supporters of US President Donald Trump.

The social media giant said the accounts broke its rules on spam and platform manipulation.

Many of the accounts used identical language, including the phrase: “YES IM BLACK AND IM VOTING FOR TRUMP!!!”

Twitter has not specified the number of accounts suspended so far or the source of them.

It said it was continuing to investigate the activity and may suspend additional accounts if they were found to be violating its policies.

The investigation was first reported by the Washington Post newspaper.

Darren Linvill, a social media disinformation researcher at Clemson University, found more than two dozen such accounts, which had generated some 265,000 retweets or Twitter mentions.

Some of the accounts used photos of black men that had appeared in news articles. Several had tens of thousands of followers.

Mr Linvill told Reuters news agency that most of the accounts were created in 2017, but had become more active in the past two months.

He said all of the accounts he had been monitoring had now been suspended but that they had “already had their impact”.

Twitter forbids using the platform “to artificially amplify or suppress information or engage in behaviour that manipulates or disrupts people’s experience” on the site.

Its action comes weeks ahead of the 3 November US presidential election.

Polls suggest about 10% of black voters are supporting Mr Trump, according to polling website FiveThirtyEight.

This kind of alleged disinformation is much more akin to what we saw in 2016 US elections.

These were fake accounts – often sourced from countries like Russia – deliberately stirring up discord on social media, or claiming to be genuine Americans with grievances when they were anything but.

We don’t know the full details here yet – Twitter aren’t saying more about the source of the accounts.

And it’s worth saying that these accounts have been suspended pending further investigation – we don’t know for sure what happened.

But all the evidence supplied so far suggests there was some level of coordination behind these accounts.

It appears the same techniques were used to glean pictures from the internet.

And the real smoking gun here is boilerplate tweets used over and over again.

If true, this really is quite damaging to Twitter – you want to know that the people you’re hearing from are authentic.

It’s also worrying that Twitter didn’t appear to pick this up themselves, they were alerted to it.

Choosing the ideal monitor:-

0
laptop 3174729 1920
laptop 3174729 1920

Size of the monitor:-

The first thing you will notice when you visit an online store or best monitor for an eye will be that monitors come in a variety of sizes. The numbers 23 “, 24”, 27 “, 28” and 29 “are usually put forward. What do they mean? The size of a monitor represents the dimensions of the monitor, usually measured in inches. a monitor is the measurement of the diagonal length of its display area and this converts from inches to centimeters (1 in = 2.54 cm).

Large format monitors are currently the market trend (like 27 monitors). inches, 16: 9) Large format monitors offer more detail and a larger display area – two aspects that are especially important for photographers when editing images. These monitors can additionally display more windows and toolbars at a time while using editing software such as Photoshop, Lightroom, VEGAS, and iMovie.

The productivity of everyone at work can thus be improved. To measure the size of a monitor, simply convert the diagonal length of the display area to centimeters. 27-inch monitors with a 16: 9 aspect ratio currently dominate the image processing market.

Resolution of the monitor:-

Resolution is another factor often misunderstood by photographers when choosing their monitor. The resolution of a monitor means the number of pixels it can display. Any image, photo, and text displayed on a monitor are made up of a dense set of pixels. Let’s take different monitors of the same size: those with a higher resolution (so more pixels) can display more precise and realistic images, thus offering more content.

Resolution defines the number of “pixels” contained in the display. A 4K display means 3,840 pixels long and 2,160 pixels wide – 4 times the accuracy of Full HD resolution.

The size of a monitor and its resolution are two very different aspects. The first report the dimensions of a monitor, while the second mentions the number of pixels displayed. “Larger monitors have higher resolution” is a generally accepted concept. Unfortunately, this is a misconception.

Imagine comparing a 25-inch monitor equipped with Full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution to a 23-inch monitor equipped with 4K (3840 x 2160) resolution. The 23-inch monitor and its 4K resolution (8 million pixels displayed) will provide much more detailed images. While the dimensions of the 25-inch monitor are larger, its resolution is lower (only 2 million pixels displayed), which means that the images displayed on the screen will be pixelated. So, Pixels per inch (PPI) or pixel density represents the number of pixels contained in 1 square inch of the area.

Monitor with IPS screen:-

The majority of monitors used for image processing are equipped with an IPS screen. Unlike TN displays used in consumer products and VA monitors, the best thing about IPS displays is the 178 ° viewing angle which prevents color variations from viewing angles.

Additionally, IPS displays provide wider and more precise color ranges. The IPS screen monitor is always a good choice, whether you are an amateur or professional image photographer. TN displays suffer from color dominance due to a narrow viewing angle. This phenomenon harms the work of a photographer. The IPS screen remains the first choice of many professional photographers thanks to its wide 178 ° viewing angle and high color accuracy.

What is the color gamut? Adobe RGB or sRGB?:-

You will usually find an option in the camera menu to switch from Adobe RGB to sRGB, in the color space category. The color space is also referred to as the color gamut, corresponding to the range of colors available. Adobe RGB typically has a 35% wider color spectrum than sRGB. A monitor that displays more colors is always preferable for a photographer. However, if you want to use Adobe RGB on the camera, the output device (e.g. monitor) must also support this space. A monitor that supports Adobe RGB provides more accurate colors.

Monitor Calibration:-

Since color is everything for photographers, buying an IPS monitor solves all problems, right? Not really! The brightness and colors of a monitor always degrade and change color over time. If these issues are neglected, the quality of the images will deteriorate and the colors will differ significantly when printed. Performing a quick monitor calibration every six months is recommended. Some photographers maintain rigorous color standards and calibrate their monitors monthly to ensure an accurate display always.

Software calibration and hardware calibration are the two types of calibration. Hardware calibration calibrates the monitor by storing data directly in its 3D LUT unlike software calibration, which is limited to adjusting the RGB values of the graphics card. There are definite advantages to hardware calibration: more and more accurate colors are recorded in the monitor to maintain continuity and prevent breakage. Monitor calibration is the only way to ensure displayed colors are always accurate, a critical setting for imaging professionals.

best monitor for eye

What if the monitor calibration is completely unknown to me?

Monitor calibration should be carefully considered. Not all amateur or professional photographers are well versed in the subject. Don’t worry if you don’t know anything about it. Some professional monitors designed for image processing are calibrated before being marketed. Among them, a few come with a color calibration report: a plus for photographers not specialized in calibration. Users are also advised to purchase monitors with Delta E color accuracy ≤ 2. A lower value means more authentic color reproduction, a determining factor for photographers.

Other miscellaneous information to remember:-

The previous paragraphs list the basic criteria in order to select a monitor suitable for image processing. However, there are many additional accessories available to help you with your job.

  • Sun visor:

Are you often annoyed that you cannot distinguish images when your monitor is placed under direct sunlight or another light source? This is where the sun visor comes in. The lens hood of a monitor acts in the same way as that of a photo lens by blocking the rays of ambient light affecting the images on the monitor, to ensure uniform colors and brightness.

  • Adjustable height and swivel:

Adjusting the height, orientation, and swivel of a monitor is essential when photographers need to magnify images to ensure the details of their retouching. For example, quickly adjusting the height and orientation of the screen allows a group of people to position the image ideally when they want to see it at the same time, on a single monitor. A swivel adjustment feature allows photographers to easily turn the monitor to an upright position; an ideal orientation for portrait mode images. A monitor with simple height, orientation, and swivel adjustments that let you use the full potential of the screen for portrait photo editing.

  • Versatile navigation between color ranges:

As mentioned earlier, Adobe RGB and sRGB are the two most popular color gamuts used by photographers. sRGB is often used when the retouched image is intended for online publication only, although Adobe RGB remains the preferred space for professionals. The ability of a monitor to switch from one color gamut to another allows users to immediately observe and compare two images taken by different photographers in different color spaces. This function allows for fewer setbacks at work.

As you can see, this choice involves many factors. As the saying goes, “the devil is in the details”. While none of this knowledge is deep or complex, taking the time to understand it and choose a better monitor will double your efficiency at work.

Trump’s troubles weighing on Iowa Senate race as Joni Ernst fights for Freelection

0

“Folks, is it a tough election cycle or what?” said Ernst, a freshman Republican, not sugarcoating her challenge in a weekend speech here. “It is a tough, tough, tough year, but you know what? I’m going to finish first!”

Yet her reelection is not entirely in her control, a reality that several of her Republican colleagues across the country are also facing as the party’s fortunes are inextricably linked to President Donald Trump, with control of the Senate at stake.

It wasn’t so long ago that Ernst seemed insulated from the political headwinds facing Republicans, particularly in a state the President won four years ago by 9 percentage points. Her Democratic challenger is Theresa Greenfield, who has never held elective office.

But Trump is now heading to Iowa on Wednesday for his first visit of the general election season, with several polls showing him locked in a tight race with Joe Biden.

“That’s the real terror of this all: Trump takes down the whole ticket, the whole Republican side of the Senate,” said Mark McAllister, a Republican who voted for Trump four years ago but has no plans of doing so again.

“There are some good things,” McAllister said of the last four years, pointing to the economy before the pandemic. “But overall, I am disgusted with him.”

Republicans start to distance from Trump

Republican officials in Iowa are nervously watching the suburbs here, just as their counterparts are doing across the nation, as the President’s shaky support threatens the Republican Senate majority. Trump campaign signs dot the fall landscape, but blue “Republicans for Biden” signs also offer an ominous warning for the final three weeks of the campaign.

The same story is unfolding in Iowa as in many battlegrounds: Independents, women and seniors are turning away from Trump, amid dissatisfaction over his handling of coronavirus and his broader conduct in office. Yet it’s resonating even more now than earlier this year, with hospitalizations for Covid-19 rising to an all-time high and cases nearing the 100,000 mark.

Former Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad, who returned home here last week after serving as the US ambassador to China for the last four years, said criticism of the President was unfounded.

“The virus is not the President’s fault,” Branstad told CNN. “President Trump finished strong in 2016 and I think he’s going to finish strong here again.”

While the President has considerable support in broad swaths of the state, particularly rural Iowa, that rosy view is not universally held by Republican officials, several of whom said they were alarmed at the President’s precarious political standing in the state.

“The bottom isn’t falling out, but we can certainly see it,” a top Republican in Iowa, who regularly speaks to the President’s campaign, told CNN. “I don’t know how far it will go.”

How Democrats are absolutely crushing the fundraising game

Ernst, whose Republican star has steadily risen since being elected to the Senate in 2014, could be collateral damage. She campaigned on a pledge to be an independent voice, promising in a memorable TV ad, surrounded by pigs, to cut pork barrel spending and “make ’em squeal.”

“She was a kick-butt candidate, who was going to take names once she got to Washington,” said Cindy DePond, stopping to chat late last week after casting her early vote. “She did not make them squeal. We didn’t see any of that from her.”

In a weekend campaign stop here, as Ernst rode her Harley-Davidson motorcycle across Iowa, she briefly talked to reporters and dismissed the notion that the President was complicating her race.

“No,” she said. “I’m running my own race.”

Asked about her standing among suburban voters, she said: “I’ve met with suburban women. They are really concerned about law and order. That’s an issue that draws them closer to the President.”

It’s a central question of the race that only the election can answer: Is the law-and-order message turning out — or turning off — voters?

Greenfield, the Democratic nominee in the Senate race, believes health care and preserving Social Security benefits are the top issues facing voters.

“Health care is number one,” Greenfield said in an interview. “Whether it’s cost or folks getting gouged for prescription drugs, whether it’s rural health care or mental health care, that’s one of the key things people are talking about — certainly during Covid that has elevated the conversation.”

She has been among the candidates in her party logging record-setting fundraising, including $29 million in the last three months, in another sign of the Democratic fervor at the prospect of taking control of the Senate.

Ernst seized upon that point, saying “Iowans cannot be bought,” at her campaign rally, suggesting out-of-state money is flooding into help her rival. Yet the reality is that Republicans — including the Trump campaign, which pulled its advertising in Iowa — are being outspent.

For her part, Greenfield said Ernst hasn’t lived up to her pledge to be an independent voice for Iowans.

“She went to Washington, she joined party leadership and she votes with (Senate Majority Leader) Mitch McConnell and party leaders 97% of the time,” Greenfield said in an interview. “That doesn’t sound very independent to me.”

With a competitive Senate race, along with four closely watched House contests, Iowa is awash in political advertising. A flood of outside groups are also weighing in, featuring images of Greenfield morphing into House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and billboards with pictures of Bernie Sanders and a message: “Bernie: Joe Biden’s socialist comrade.”

At the center of it all is the presidential campaign, which is now locked in a tight race. Trump’s standing may lift — or sink — the Republican ticket here, but the fact that he is defending his Iowa terrain at all is a far bigger sign of trouble in other battleground states.

Four years ago, Trump won 93 of the state’s 99 counties, including 31 that twice voted for President Barack Obama. Iowa had more so-called pivot counties than any state in the country.

Jasper County, once home to the Maytag company, is one of them.

Michelle Smith, the county’s Democratic chairwoman, said many too many Democrats were not inspired to vote four years ago for Hillary Clinton, which she said wouldn’t happen this time.

“The people I know who didn’t vote are going to vote for Joe Biden this time because they realize by not voting what we’ve had to do ensure the last 3 1/2 years,” Smith said. “At the end of the day, I really do think it is either a vote for or against Trump.”

Vulnerable Republicans avoid criticizing Trump after admission to Woodward about downplaying virus

But signs of Trump strength are plentiful across Jasper County, which is about 40 miles east of Des Moines. Conversations with Republicans here suggest far less concern about the controversy of the day back in Washington — many of them self-inflicted, voters are quick to point out — but the President whose results they believe in.

“We’re so far into it now, people either like him or they don’t,” said Thad Nearmyer, the Republican county chairman. “If you already like him, you’re pretty much locked in.”

Yet even with early voting underway and Election Day three weeks away, some voters are still not entirely sure what to do.

Mark Hallam, who holds a nonpartisan seat on the Newton City Council, counts himself in that group. He said the economic downturn, in the wake of coronavirus, could change some minds and make the president and Ernst more vulnerable, but he doubts the president’s conduct will suddenly sway anyone.

“Trump is something of an enigma to me,” Hallam said. “I enjoy some of his theatrics, while others I’m put off by, because it’s my not personal style. But it is who Donald Trump is.”
