Oven Repairs

0

What are the important factors when choosing the best repairer for your oven or stove?

The following list should be a good start:

  • Do you need an electrician or gas fitter?
  • Does the technician have the proper certification?
  • Does the organisation have the proper Licenses i.e. electrical contractors license?
  • What are their charges?
  • What Brands do they service?
  • How do their warranties compare?
  • Do they have the rights parts on board?
  • Are they members of a peak body association?
  • Do they have published policies and procedures?

Well, seems simple enough, or at least if you read enough blogs etc. you will find many variations on the above list stating their method/list/tips are the panacea for your dilemma; how to choose the right repairer!

The reality is vastly different. Most people needing their oven or stove repaired don’t have time to make a list and methodically check it off before making a booking. Worse still, in little Adelaide you are limited to a handful of truly professional repairers who repair ovens and stoves for a living, where their skills, resources, stock, parts etc match your requirements.

So what can you do that is quick and easy while still improving your chances of getting a good repairer? If you don’t have time to read the complete article, you can jump to the summary at the end of the article, meanwhile the advice I can give in one sentence is two things: Remember a) most major appliance repairers will tell you what you want to hear, and b) you only get what you pay for… If you’re lucky!

However, If you’re interested in the scenic version, great, we will revisit some of the bullet points above and hopefully fine tune on your bull-dust radar.

Q. Does the technician have the right certification?

A. Yes Remember most will tell you what you want to hear. But the real answer lies in a lengthy discussion. For example; is your appliance electric or gas. Then we need to decide if the problem is electrical or gas. Most gas ovens or stoves have electrical systems within them, which, if the oven or stove is hardwired, requires a registered electrician to carry out the repair. If the oven or stove has an electrical fault and the unit is not hard wired, then the chances are the average refrigeration mechanic can undertake the repair legitimately. But and isn’t there always a but, how do you know if the unit is hardwired? And how do you know if the unit has an electrical or gas fault. Most customers won’t know! The reason these clever lists are often not all that helpful is that you have no way of knowing if the repairer has told a white lie or not. In truth, they don’t either. They need to see the job before making that judgement. And here is the reason they told you what you want to hear; because most will collect a minimum payment at the first visit regardless of whether they can complete the repair or not. The more professional repairer will tell you who you need to call, but for them, the payoff has already been achieved; that being payment for the first visit.

Q. What are your charges?

A. Various. Many will state a call out fee, plus a rate. Most call out fees include some maximum time limit i.e. 1/4 or 1/2 an hour. Some will qualify a fixed charge. Many will exclude the GST. But you, being a switched on individual, googled for a repairer that doesn’t charge a call out fee. Well, before you pat yourself on the back too hard, make sure you ask “what the minimum charge will be”. Many repairers are responding to the pressures of what we refer to as the “Deal Shoppers” who ring around town and compare prices and select the cheapest price. Those who book a call with the cheapest deal rarely end up getting the best repair. And if they do get a cheap job, there are generally good reasons underpinning that ability, i.e. cutting corners, fitting cheap or second hand parts, not paying insurances, not paying correct wages, not using qualified tradespeople, not being careful to refit covers and alike with all their screws and safety harnesses and the list goes on. Remember, you only get what you pay for.

Q. What brands do they service?

A. Your brand! – Because it’s what you want to hear! Most will tell you they can service your brand, and for the most part that’s true. On the other end of the scale are the brand specific repairers who are generally proud of the brands they service as it reflects their status in the industry. They hold it out like a badge of honour and will tell toot sweet if they don’t service your brand. Specialists will carry more parts for a given brand, so their chances of completing a job during the first visit is higher than someone who repairs everything and anything. The compromise for brand specific repairer is the list of appliances that brand covers i.e. ovens, stoves, washing machines, dishwashers, range-hoods, microwaves, dryers and others. Which means the space for oven or stove parts compete with pumps, and motors and seals and timers of the other appliances. Look for the repairer who specialises in your brand oven or stove.

Q. What is your warranty?

A. 12 months! Or at least that is the most likely answer, because it’s what you want to hear. But this is a complex piece of consumer legislation. There are two facets of warranty, labour and materials. The normal warranty for Labour is 3 months. Both of which the court will throw out the window if it is a matter before them. But these periods serve as a reasonable guide. The catch is in the judgement. If a repairer has to return to a job to repair a recall, how do you judge if the work that was done is the cause or if the cause is a different fault altogether. There is a better than good chance the latter is the case. Those companies that offer longer warranties know that the chances they will have to cover the cost of repairs under the terms of warranty are very low. In fact, it has the added benefit of acting like a loyalty program. If the warranty extends to say 5 years or 10 years or even a lifetime warranty remember you are unlikely to be able to judge if the warranty fault is what was previously repaired. So, for the period of the extended warranty you will call the warranting company first in the misguided belief the work will be done for free, which is true for very few, if any of those return visits. Remember, if it seems too good to be true… it probably is.

Q. Do they have the right parts on board?

A. Yes – Because it’s what you want to hear! Service vehicles have limited space, as such high turnover/high profit parts represent the largest volume held. Repairers often qualify the part(s) are normally held in stock. But that does not mean it is in the van that is designated for your job. No repair company doing major appliance service work is able to maintain an accurate up to date van stock. Which means more likely than not, staff taking the booking have no idea what’s in the van. Stock held in the van is only one problem, the second is the quality of the part. Elements, thermostats, hinges, door seals, etc. are not made by the brand manufacturer. Elements for instance are made by dozens of manufacturers, but they generally only make elements. Brand manufacturers purchase their elements from the more reputable suppliers, subject to a contract. However those same elements are also made by copy manufacturers. Some are good quality, some are dubious. But the difference is the price. Cheaper elements can be bought for up to 50% cheaper than the higher quality elements.

Q. Is the repairer a member of an Association.

A. Yes – you guessed it, because that is what you want to hear. Electricians are often members of NECA the National Electrical Contractors Association. The question is, how does that help you qualify the repairer is a bonafide, quality operator? Simple, it doesn’t! This group are really about electrical contractors who wire building – big and small. AIA Appliance Industry Australia is probably the main relevant association. Sadly in South Australia that will limit you to one repairer, Electrolux. My experience is that the Major Appliance Repair industry is just too small to support the real work necessary to validate a repairer as a bona fide quality operator. Just because the repairer is a member of an association doesn’t mean they will be held to a higher standard of repair.

Q. Do they have published policy and procedure.

A. Hopefully yes, but more likely no. However, this is a valid means of improving your chances of getting a quality repairer. But really who wants to or has time to read a companies policy and procedure before making a booking. No one. And then there is always the probability that the written documents, if they are made available are marketing tools rather than the method and means by which the repairer operates. Having access to a repairers policy and procedure is helpful, but only if a) you have time to read and understand them and b) if you can verify they conform to them.

SUMMARY

If you can’t be bothered reading the long version above, here’s the abbreviated version.

    • Make sure you qualify the minimum payable charge at the outset. No call out fee, does not mean “Free”.

    • Fixed price repairs is a valid advantage for simple repairs. Because these repairers need to complete the work within a limited period of time and visits to remain profitable. They generally limit their time to half an hour on the first job. Generally they do not undertake complex diagnostics or repairs.

    • When engaging a repairer who qualifies “Free quotes” make sure the quote is obligation free and that your appliance remains in your care. Most repairers who offer free quotes recoup their quotation costs via a margin built into the repair work. However, if you don’t proceed with the repairs, a fee is normally forth coming.

    • Ask if there is additional costs if a return visit to fit parts is required. Most repairers have a margin built into the parts, but others don’t and add a charge for travel.

    • Cheap or second hand parts are impossible for you to screen for. Here you rely on your gut feel and experience. If they drive a beat up old van, wear greasy – torn clothes, look unkempt you can probably expect to get ripped off. But that doesn’t mean, just because they come in a clean van all dressed to impress that they are honest quality operators, but generally your chances improve.

    • One of the ways technicians shorten their time on the job is to bend covers, leave screws out and generally damage panels that can’t be seen. They fail to re-clip or secure cables etc. Again this is difficult to screen for, but can generally be measured by the number of jobs they book a day. 8 calls a day is a fairly busy day. If they do more than 10 jobs a day or complete jobs in 15 minutes or less you can safely assume they are taking short cuts.

  • Long waiting times for parts are common in this industry. Some are valid and some are not. Some repairers use parts as a means to improve their scheduling efficiency. These repairers know you won’t wait very long for the initial visit, but when they have collected money for the initial visit you are committed to wait for the return visit. Try to get a gauge for how long parts will take before making the initial booking. This wont overcome the problem, but might help manage your expectations.

Remember… you only get what you pay for and only if you’re lucky. That is a fundamental law of business, as rock solid as the law of gravity. Make sure you know why the differences exist; only then are you ready to make an informed decision on repairs.

Finally, being a deal shopper doesn’t mean you will get the “best repair”. The ‘best repair’ is buried in the fine detail and only those people with lots of time to diligently check of their list of do’s and dont’s can be confident of getting the best deal. Deal shopping is shortsighted and ultimately the most likely means to getting a shonky repair rather than a quality one. For those of us who are time poor and have better things to do with their life than trawl the internet for hours and hours, the best way to be confident of getting a good repairer is to look for those repairers who specialise in your brand product, be prepared to pay a fair price and if you are happy with their results tell your friends and hang onto their business card.

Read Holy Quran Online

0

It is extremely valuable for Muslims, regardless of their sects, to learn and gain an understanding of the Holy Quran. Quran is taught to many of us from the very beginning. Most of us are taught Quran in our childhood. However, there are some people who have not yet studied the Holy Quran. One of the main reasons for this issue is the unavailability of appropriate teachers to tutor such people. Parents face many problems in finding a reputable instructor near the house. This ultimately leads to them giving up searching, and the kid never comes to understand the virtuous knowledge.

Read Holy Quran Online

There are many people among us who have been unable to read the Quran and want to do so. The development of the internet has made it probable for all such people to read the Holy Book. You can only scan and search the internet for E-Quran. Yes, you read it right, E-Quran. It is an online version of the Holy Book. There are many different sites that offer this facility. They also offer qualified teachers who will help you in understanding the Quran. Unlike a school, personal attention is paid to each and every student. This enables you to learn at the pace that is most suited to you. You not only understand the Quran but make command on it. Within no time you can get this knowledge with the benefit of appropriate guidance.

There are many advantages of learning the Quran online, especially for children who should learn it as early as possible. Not only is online coaching more appropriate for parents, but it also gives the child the value of a personal instructor who can assist him in analyzing the verses of the Quran. The instructor may also correct him when it comes to errors in pronunciation. Apart from children, online Quran learning is also advantageous for grownups. With the tough and hectic schedules nowadays, it becomes tremendously difficult to find time to go to Quran learning centers. Also, because of the social restraints, you may not find an enormous number of places to tutor adults exclusively. For these reasons, it is best to study Quran through an online source.

A big advantage of online Quran learning is that apart from studying the Quran itself, you can also study different explanations given by different scholars. This enables to get diverse viewpoints. Also, you are able to get translations in various languages. You may choose the preferred language in order to get a better insight of the Quran.

The importance of the Quran cannot be expressed much more than this. The Prophet (S.A.W) said, “The most superior among you (Muslims) is the one who learns the Quran and teaches it” (Sahih Bukhari, Book #61, Hadith #546). It is the book that not only contains teachings of how to live your lives according to God’s Will, but also all information that has ever been discovered by mankind. It also contains information that is yet to be or will never be found by scientific researches. Such is the power of this Holy Book. Once you get a grip on its knowledge, you will be able to change your perspective towards life. You will know that all these worldly things are just temporary. There is a much more peaceful and happier life waiting for you.

Inside the Capitol Attack

0

Want to get The Morning by email? Here’s the sign-up.

It’s hard to think of another crime that the perpetrators documented so thoroughly and publicly.

The people who participated in the Capitol attack on Jan. 6 posted thousands of videos of it to Parler, a social network. Journalists and other witnesses have released dozens of their own videos, too. Over the past several days, news organizations have been studying these videos and have begun releasing more details about what happened.

This reconstruction work is important, because the attack was a signature moment in U.S. history: A mob, incited by the president of the United States, stormed the halls of Congress in an effort to prevent it from certifying the president’s electoral defeat. During the attack, the mob killed a police officer and went looking for members of Congress.

Below, my colleagues and I have summarized the key points from the latest news accounts, and we’ve provided links for people who want to go deeper:

The mob came very close to lawmakers. At several points, rioters were within feet of members of Congress, separated by only a small group of police officers, a multimedia article in The Washington Post shows. Some rioters passed within 100 feet of Vice President Mike Pence, who was hiding with his family in an office near the Senate chamber.

Many of the attackers openly discussed committing violence, and lawmakers feared for their lives. “Drag them out!” one man yelled inside the Capitol, referring to lawmakers; another group chanted “Hang Mike Pence!” As the mob closed in, members of Congress hiding inside the House chamber called loved ones and told one another to remove their lapel pins so rioters could not identify them.

Rioters abused the police. One man, carrying an American flag, profanely yelled at a line of Washington police officers that his 5-year-old son was more of a man than they were. Others beat, knocked over and pushed past officers, and threatened to kill one with his own gun.

Police officers inside the Capitol were often outnumbered and chose not to use force. In the Post video, Officer Eugene Goodman, facing down a large group by himself, lured the mob to chase after him — away from the Senate chamber.

Later, after senators had evacuated, a lone officer politely pleaded with rioters to leave the chamber. “Any chance I could get you guys to leave the Senate wing?” the officer asks in video captured by The New Yorker’s Luke Mogelson. “Just want to let you guys know this is, like, the sacredest place.”

Only after the arrival of more backup, some from the D.C. National Guard, did officers end the riot.

Some rioters may have been collecting information. The New Yorker video shows a group of men rifling through Senate desks and snapping photos. One says he is looking for something to “use against these scumbags.”

The F.B.I. is also investigating whether a Pennsylvania woman stole computer equipment from Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office and intended to sell it to Russian agents. The woman turned herself in to the police yesterday.

The mob felt empowered by Republican leaders. As rioters pushed their way down a hallway, one shouted at a police officer, “We are listening to your boss: Trump.” And as a few men looked through documents on the Senate floor, one, referring to Senator Ted Cruz, said: “I think Cruz would want us to do this, so I think we’re good.”

Multiple military members, active and retired, were part of the mob. The F.B.I. is investigating the role of the Oath Keepers, an anti-government militia made up largely of former law enforcement and military veterans. (In response, the Pentagon says it will intensify internal efforts to combat far-right extremism.)

Another rioter was Klete Keller, a gold-medal-winning swimmer. One of Keller’s former Olympic teammates described him as an “aimless, rudderless, 30-something man who … became a perfect candidate to fall into a radical, conservative rabbit hole of conspiracy theorists and rioters involved in insurrection,” according to The Post. Since the riot, Keller told a former coach that he “didn’t mean for any of this to happen,” The Times reported.

So far, at least 70 people have been arrested and charged with participating in the attack. The authorities say they are still seeking information, as this F.B.I. poster with suspects’ photos shows.

A Morning Read: Nine years ago, the rock climbing champion Lai Chi-wai was paralyzed from the waist down in a car accident. It didn’t stop him from trying to ascend a skyscraper.

From Opinion: Jamelle Bouie and Jennifer Senior have columns.

Lives Lived: Harry Joseph Brant was a founding member of the next-generation jet set and a new-look “It” boy known for pushing the boundaries of gender stereotype in both cosmetics and clothing. He died at 24.

Canada invented the sport of ice hockey, and much of the country is obsessed with it. But the country’s professional teams have had a rough few decades: No Canadian team has won the Stanley Cup — the trophy that goes to the National Hockey League champion — since the Montreal Canadiens 28 years ago. Canada’s previous longest drought was a mere six years.

This year promises to be different. Even if an American team wins the cup, Canada will at least be able to crown its own champion.

Because the Canadian government has restricted travel to and from the U.S., where the pandemic is worse, the N.H.L. has reorganized its divisions — and has placed all seven Canadian teams in the new North Division.

The Canadian teams will play only one another during the regular season, and the top four will then meet in the playoffs this spring. Whichever team emerges — the champion of Canada — will face the three winners from the U.S. divisions in a Stanley Cup bracket.

“Every night is going to feel like Saturday night, ‘Hockey Night in Canada,’ coast to coast,” the general manager of the Calgary Flames told The National Post, referring to a popular television broadcast. “It may only be one season, but I think it’s going to be awesome.”

The season began last week, and oddsmakers like the Toronto Maple Leafs, who have famously struggled for much of the past half-century.

Thanks for spending part of your morning with The Times. See you tomorrow. — David

A correction: Yesterday’s newsletter included the wrong location for an Egyptian hospital that had run out of oxygen. It was in El Husseineya, not Cairo.

P.S. Recent print editions of The Times have featured an usually high number of banner headlines. You can explore some of them — from the presidential election to the vaccine rollout and the Capitol riot — here.

You can see today’s print front page here.

Today’s episode of “The Daily” features conversations with Trump’s supporters about the Capitol riot. On the latest “Sway,” the actor Bryan Cranston breaks down his method.

‘The Most Bipartisan Impeachment’

0

Even during a scandal, a president’s own party members usually defend him. Decades later, people tend to forget how overwhelming the partisan support was and exaggerate the degree of conscience among politicians of the past.

  • In 1999, no Senate Democrats voted to convict Bill Clinton during his impeachment trial. Many Democrats made excuses for his affair with a 22-year-old White House intern, and some went so far as to smear her.

  • In the 1970s, Republican leaders spent months casting the investigations into the Nixon administration as partisan overreach. Gerald Ford, while still the Republicans’ House leader, called the Watergate investigation a “political witch hunt.” Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush defended both Nixon and his bribetaking vice president, Spiro Agnew.

  • In the 1860s, Andrew Johnson’s fellow Democrats stood solidly by him during his impeachment and kept him from conviction.

All of which helps puts yesterday’s second impeachment of President Trump into perspective: It was both a strikingly partisan affair — and an unusually bipartisan one.

On the one hand, dozens of members of Congress refused to break with a president who tried to overturn an election result and incited a mob that attacked Congress, killing a police officer. Only 10 House Republicans voted for impeachment, and the final tally was 232 to 197.

“The political penalties for encouraging extremism and attacking democratic norms are dangerously weak,” the political scientist Brendan Nyhan wrote yesterday.

On the other hand, Trump has suffered more defections from his party than any previous president besides Nixon, who ultimately lost Republican support and resigned before the House could impeach him. Yesterday’s vote, Daniel Nichanian of The Appeal wrote, was “the most bipartisan impeachment of a president in U.S. history.”

By comparison, only five House Democrats voted to impeach Clinton, The Times’s Carl Hulse noted — three of whom later became Republicans, while a fourth joined the George W. Bush administration. In 2019, not a single House Republican voted to impeach Trump. Only one Republican senator, Mitt Romney, voted to convict, and other Republicans disdained the process from the start.

This time, they are sending a more nuanced message. Mitch McConnell, the Republican Senate leader, has put out word that he is glad impeachment is happening, and he issued a statement yesterday saying he had “not made a final decision on how I will vote” in the Senate trial.

Of course, McConnell is a crafty politician who would like both to be rid of Trump and to prevent President-elect Joe Biden from passing much legislation. So McConnell also signaled yesterday that he would not start a Senate trial before Biden took office, effectively forcing Democrats to choose between trying Trump and focusing on Biden’s agenda.

The delay seems to make conviction less likely. “People’s outrage levels recede,” my colleague Maggie Haberman wrote yesterday. “Memories fade. And I do wonder if there will be as much Senate Republican anger next month as there is now.”

Still, the existence of that anger underscores the historic nature of yesterday. Trump became the first president in U.S. history to be impeached twice — and only the second to have a meaningful number of his party members in Congress deem him unfit to be president.

The 10 Republicans who voted for impeachment included Liz Cheney of Wyoming, the No. 3 ranking Republican in the House; four others from safely Republican seats; and five from more competitive districts.

“I’m not afraid of losing my job, but I am afraid that my country will fail,” Jaime Herrera Beutler of Washington, who’s in her sixth term, said. “My vote to impeach our sitting president is not a fear-based decision. I am not choosing a side. I’m choosing truth.”

  • A team from the World Health Organization arrived in Wuhan to investigate the source of the virus. Chinese authorities barred two scientists because of positive antibody tests.

  • U.S. states are scrambling to meet the skyrocketing demand for vaccinations. Here’s the new guidance about who gets a shot.

  • Prosecutors charged Rick Snyder, the former governor of Michigan, with willful neglect of duty over the crisis in Flint that left thousands of residents drinking lead-tainted water.

  • Gunmen killed at least 80 people in an ethnically driven massacre in Ethiopia.

Letter of Recommendation: Eat chips, The Times’s Sam Anderson writes. “A bag of chips is a way to defeat time. It brings temporary infinity: a feeling that it will never end. A chip. A chip. A chip. Another chip.”

From Opinion: Farhad Manjoo, Nicholas Kristof and Thomas B. Edsall have columns.

Lives Lived: Adolfo Quiñones, better known as Shabba-Doo, grew up in a public-housing project in Chicago and became a pioneer of street dance. He called it “a valid art form, on the same level as jazz or ballet.” He died at 65.

The pandemic has been very good for the video-game business. Spending on games rose 22 percent last year, The Washington Post reports. The number of monthly users on Discord, a chat platform popular with gamers, doubled to 140 million.

But the boom isn’t about only the pandemic. It’s bigger than that, Sean Monahan argues in The Guardian: Video games are replacing music as the dominant form of youth culture.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Joe Biden turned to Among Us and Animal Crossing: New Horizons to reach young voters. The rapper Travis Scott had more than 12 million viewers for a virtual concert on Fortnite last year — nearly double the audience of the 2020 MTV Video Music Awards. “We’re going to see more of these events, even after regular concerts are safe to attend again,” an analyst told The Hollywood Reporter.

The cultural sway of games stems largely from interaction. Games like Animal Crossing have become places to socialize, and even to host virtual graduations, parties or protests.

“Ten years ago, younger generations were leaving behind traditional media for social media,” another analyst wrote in a 2020 Global Games Market Report. “Today, they are leaving behind social media for more interactive experiences.”

The pangram from yesterday’s Spelling Bee was formula. Today’s puzzle is above — or you can play online if you have a Games subscription.

Here’s today’s Mini Crossword, and a clue: Like lettuce and kale (five letters).

Thanks for spending part of your morning with The Times. See you tomorrow. — David

These New Yorkers Are Accused of Taking Part in the Capitol Riot

0

As the Federal Bureau of Investigations intensified its nationwide manhunt for those who broke into the United States Capitol last week, arrests of some of the over 170 suspects began to ramp up. As rioters departed Washington, D.C., and fanned out to their homes across the country, agents were sifting through over 100,000 digital tips and bringing federal charges against more than 70 people to date.

Many face charges including unlawful entry and disorderly conduct, but more grievous charges are expected for some, according to law enforcement officials — including sedition.

A number of those who law enforcement say participated in the riot came from Mr. Trump’s home state of New York.

Wearing a police vest and draped in animal pelts, Aaron Mostofsky, 34, cut a distinct figure when he was interviewed inside the Capitol while clutching a riot shield.

“We were cheated,” he said to a reporter for The New York Post, repeating President Trump’s debunked claim of widespread election fraud. “I don’t think 75 million people voted for Trump — I think it was close to 85 million.”

On Tuesday, Mr. Mostofsky, the son of Judge Steven Mostofsky of Kings County Supreme Court, who also goes by Shlomo, was arrested at his brother’s house in Brooklyn on charges that include stealing government property, which carries a maximum prison sentence of 10 years. What appear to be fur pelts were taken out of Mr. Mostofsky’s own house by F.B.I. agents, in a video of the arrest posted on Twitter.

Both Mr. Mostofsky and his father are registered as Democrats, according to election records. At a court hearing on Tuesday, Jeffrey T. Schwartz, a lawyer for Mr. Mostofsky, said he was “not part of the mob.”

“He was not rampaging,” Mr. Schwartz said in Federal District Court in Brooklyn. “He understands how the whole thing in Washington got totally out of hand.”

In a Facebook comment on Nov. 7, the day the presidential election was called for Joseph R. Biden Jr., Mr. Mostofsky wrote: “when and where are we protesting/rioting,” according to his criminal complaint.

William Pepe, a Metropolitan Transportation Authority employee from Beacon, N.Y., was arrested by F.B.I. agents in the parking lot of a bank in White Plains, N.Y., on Tuesday and is facing charges of unlawful entry and disorderly conduct for his breaching of the Capitol, the Justice Department announced.

Mr. Pepe, 31, called in sick to work to travel to Washington last Wednesday. He was suspended without pay last week from his job as a Metro-North Railroad laborer at its Brewster rail yard.

A federal magistrate judge, Judith C. McCarthy, released Mr. Pepe on a $10,000 bond on Wednesday, ordering that he abide by a nighttime curfew, wear a GPS monitoring device and surrender his shotgun and hunting knife to the authorities. Mr. Pepe was “restricted from traveling to the District of Columbia for any purpose whatsoever,” except for an in-person court hearing, the judge said.

The M.T.A. is cooperating with federal law enforcement agencies. On Tuesday the agency also lodged internal disciplinary charges against Mr. Pepe, which, following an investigation, may result in termination from his job, for which he makes around $73,000 a year.

“Those who attacked that symbol of American democracy disqualified themselves from working for the people of New York,” a spokesman for the authority said in a statement.

Sharon Pineo, 70, of Round Lake, N.Y., was photographed being detained by officers on the steps of the Capitol, apparently having made it past barricades surrounding the building. Ms. Pineo organized a charter bus to the protest, according to The Albany Times Union.

A member of the town of Malta’s zoning board of appeals, Ms. Pineo, a Republican, has since resigned her position, following calls for her removal, according to The Daily Gazette, which obtained a copy of her resignation letter.

“I tender this resignation with regret, but believe that in these challenging times, it is important to not all any impediment to the smooth operation of the town’s business,” Ms. Pineo wrote.

Though she was photographed in a green windbreaker, slumped as multiple officers appear to grapple with her, Ms. Pineo denied involvement beyond protesting, she said in a statement submitted to a local radio station, The Gazette reported.

“I would like the public to know that I did not enter the building nor did I commit any violence,” she said in the statement, adding she merely “exercised on behalf of the people the freedom of speech.”

She has not been charged with a crime.

Pete Harding of Cheektowaga, N.Y., spent about 40 minutes inside the Capitol, according to an interview he gave to The Buffalo News. Mr. Harding, an anti-mask activist who has frequently spoken out against coronavirus lockdown measures, was arrested this summer for refusing to wear a mask in a Buffalo liquor store.

In the interview with The News, Mr. Harding said he was in the Capitol to document what transpired. “I did nothing wrong,” he said, adding that he had contacted the F.B.I. after video surfaced of him inside the building, and many called for his arrest on social media.

Mr. Harding also was filmed participating in a group that took photographic equipment from journalists, threw it in a pile and tried to set it on fire.

“That was a symbolic gesture,” said Mr. Harding, who is seen in the video stooping over the pile and attempting to ignite it with a lighter. “Nothing burned.”

Well known for protests in his home borough of Staten Island and for loudly heckling Mayor Bill de Blasio on the Staten Island Ferry, Gary Phaneuf was arrested in Washington on Jan. 7 following his attendance at the riot violating the curfew imposed by Mayor Muriel E. Bowser, according to Washington’s Metropolitan Police Department.

Mr. Phaneuf’s politics appear to have shifted over time: In 2011, Mr. Phaneuf was profiled in The New Yorker while participating in Occupy Wall Street protests and camped out in Zuccotti Park in Manhattan. At the time, he expressed worry about the risk that right-wing speech posed to President Barack Obama. “I’m scared about what I’m hearing from the Tea Party and Rush Limbaugh; they’re creating an environment where he could be shot,” he said.

In 2016, Mr. Phaneuf protested the retirement of a New York City police commissioner, citing the death of Eric Garner, a Black man who was placed in a chokehold by the police on Staten Island, according to Pavement Pieces, a local news site out of New York University’s Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute.

This week, Mr. Phaneuf referred to Ashli Babbitt, the military veteran who was killed by Capitol Police when she tried to force her way into the United States Senate speaker’s lobby as “a martyr,” according to an interview with a D.C. radio station, WTOP News. “We have a bloody red shirt to wave around,” he told the station.

4 Tips for Keeping Your Washing Machine In Great Shape

0

Like all appliances, washing machines operate much more reliably if they receive regular, preventative maintenance and care. By regularly inspecting parts and performing a few simple washing machine repairs, you can prevent more serious damage that would require professional machine repair or even replacement.

Monitor the Hoses: – Water enters your washing machine through tubes called fill hoses, which are typically made of rubber. If these hoses rupture, water can burst out and flood your home. By periodically examining your fill hoses as part of regular washer repair, you can spot weaknesses in the rubber and replace hoses before they burst. If you are concerned about your fill hoses breaking, you can replace the standard rubber ones with durable stainless steel washing unit hoses.

4 Tips for Keeping Your Washing Machine In Great Shape

Adjust the Legs: – Washing machines use powerful rotations to clean the clothes inside; this causes washing machines to vibrate while in operation. However, if your unit vibrates particularly violently, it could cause damage to the sensitive electronics inside. You can typically correct this excessive vibration by adjusting your machine’s legs to ensure that the machine is completely level. If this doesn’t solve the problem, call an appliance repair service. Also be mindful of the size of your wash load. Some materials can bind together in the washing machine causing uneven force inside the bowl. Never over-fill your washer.

Clean the Lint Trap – Many washers send lint directly down the drain, but some capture it in lint traps. Cleaning this trap reduces strain on your machine and makes your clothes come out cleaner. The location of the lint trap varies by appliance brand-Maytag machines typically collect lint within the center agitator, while others use lint filters located near the top of the basin.

Clean the Bowl – If your clothes are starting to smell moldy or not fresh after a wash, it may be time to clean the bowl of your washer. To easily clean your washing machine frugally with environmentally friendly products, pour two cups of vinegar into the bowl and run the machine with hot water. You may also substitute lemon juice instead of vinegar. There are other machine cleaning products as well.
Home washing machine repairs can address simple problems before they get worse. By practicing preventative maintenance, you can significantly extend the life of your washer machine. If you’re considering replacing your home appliance, first consider appliance repair. An appliance repair specialist will be able to tell you if your appliance is worth saving, or if you should upgrade to a newer model.

Mr. Appliance Corporation is one of the largest and fastest-growing full service appliance repair companies in the world. We service all types and brands of home appliances and commercial equipment. Our appliance repair technicians are clean and professional, and provide appliance repair service you can rely on.

5 Ways To Save Money – Coupons, Deals and Discounts

0

Who wouldn’t be looking for ways to save money in today’s times? We live in an age that demands frugal living. With the prices soaring every day, saving a few bucks on groceries, clothes and home utility items can spread a smile across your face. The money could be put to more productive uses or simply used to buy your favorite pair of shoes; the same ones you’ve been saving up for months.

If you love to shop but feel the pinch when your bundle of cash dwindles fast, here’s how you can save money on every purchase you make. It is not only about using coupons and getting discounts. It is more about securing the best prices so that at the end of the day, you don’t feel like you’ve overpaid.

1. Couponing –

It is by far the most commonly used method to save money on purchases. It is also quite a lucrative option. Couponing involves using coupons handed out by brands as a marketing strategy to sustain old customers and attract new ones. It is a rebate on the retail price. The rebate rate ranges between 5% and 50%. It is redeemed at the store at the time of purchase of an item. There are digital and printable coupons.

Coupons enable shoppers to get quality products at a discounted price. They are available on almost all products including your groceries, restaurant meals, apparel, cosmetics and pet food. There are different places to source coupons including traditional sources such as newspapers, magazines and monthly bulletins and modern sources such as coupon sites. These coupon sites display coupons and coupon codes of various brands and items.

5 Ways To Save Money - Coupons, Deals and Discounts

2. Cashback offers –

The Cashback offer is another attractive shopping offer that helps you save some money. Different vendors have different schemes in this regard. The first is the credit card cashback offer. It involves earning reward points or air miles or bonus gifts when you use your card to shop at specified locations and retailers. The points can be accumulated and redeemed at a later date. The other scheme includes getting a certain percentage of money back on your purchase.

3. Ask for a discount –

You can look at it as a more sophisticated manner of haggling. Your mother might have done it a few years ago to stretch her monthly budget, but haggling can be embarrassing. Most vendors have a margin of discount. However, they do not publish it. These discounts are given only if the customer asks. After you’ve selected your items of purchase, you can inquire politely if you are eligible for a discount at the cash counter. On rare occasions, you will walk out without one because again it is a business strategy used to beat competition.

4. Seasonal Sales –

A change of seasons brings along a good deal of discounts and offers. You can take advantage of these seasonal sales. You can save the best on monsoon sales when some of your favorite items are sold for half their price. Shopping during the holidays as well as post-holidays is a great time to get good bargains.

5. Special Promotions –

Vendors keep offering special promotions to promote their business. It could be an early-bird sale or a special offer on the occasion of a new setup. In addition to discounts, you might get free shipping for your goods.
