Former President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev announced on April 28 that he was leaving the post of chairman of the Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan. He transfers his powers to the President of the country, Kasym-Zhomart Tokayev.

Nazarbayev noted that since 1995 he had been at the origins of the creation of the Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan and headed it, but decided to move on, making a serious and emotional decision for him to leave the post.

“I have the right to lead the Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan for life, I will always be with you, I do not refuse. The Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan should stand next to the current president. I decided to transfer my right to head the Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan to President Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev, ”Nazarbayev said during the session of the Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan.

Tokayev responded by offering Nazarbayev to become the honorary chairman of the Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan. Nazarbayev accepted the offer, stating that he would continue to work.

The Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan was established on March 1, 1995 at the initiative of Nazarbayev. The activities of the Assembly are aimed at implementing the state national policy, ensuring social and political stability in the republic and increasing the efficiency of interaction between state and civil institutions of society in the field of interethnic relations.

Earlier, in January 2021, Tokayev signed a decree on the composition of the government of the republic after the last parliamentary elections. According to the document, the majority of members of the cabinet of ministers retained their posts after the parliamentary elections.
