Ted Wheeler, Mayor of Portland, Oregon, has asked residents to help city officials in their efforts to end violent protests that have taken place in the city under the banner of the Black Lives Matter movement since last spring.

“They want to burn, they want to rampage, they want to intimidate, they want to attack,” the mayor said, announcing another extension of the state of emergency in the city. “By uniting, we can resist violence and return our city to us.”

Wheeler called on townspeople to help identify violent protesters and said police would be allowed to use “all available measures” to suppress violent actions. “Our task is to expose them, arrest them and convict them,” the mayor stressed. “If you have information about such people, call the police.”

In the second half of April, another wave of violent actions took place in Portland. The rioters set fires, shots rang out. Glass was shattered in the windows of the First Christian Church and in the building of the Oregon Historical Society, and the walls of the concert hall. Arlene Schnitzer was painted with graffiti. The local Girls ‘and Boys’ Club suffered an estimated $ 20,000 damage.
