Women Rights and Lawyers in Pakistan:

Principal of Policy:

While laying down the Principles of Policy, it declares in Article 34 that ‘Steps shall be taken to ensure full participation of women in all spheres of national life. In the practice of lawyers in Pakistan, however, the promise of equality has not only been ignored, but it has also been blatantly violated. The Sixth Five-Year Plan (1983-88) document noted: “In Pakistan today, the profile of women is simply shocking,” and went on to give cold statistics about the legacy of neglect’. That caused no soul-searching.

 

Seventh and Eighth Plan Documents:

The Seventh and Eighth Plan documents and several other reports and studies of this period echoed that cry of despair. In 1995, nearly half a century after the creation of Pakistan, the National Report for the Fourth U.N. World Conference for Women had to admit that women continue to suffer in the face of oppressive patriarchal structures, rigid orthodox norms, and stifling socio-cultural customs and traditions. Habit, the safety of the status quo, and the political and social weakness will continue to make women’s historical burdens of wrongs hard to alleviate.
