Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan agree on a complete ceasefire

Bishkek and Dushanbe have agreed on a complete ceasefire. On May 1, following the talks, this was announced by the head of the State Committee for National Security of Kyrgyzstan, Saimumin Yatimov.

“Today a very fruitful conversation took place, initiated by the heads of state of the two countries. The tragedy that has occurred in the border areas should never be repeated. <...> A fundamental agreement has been reached on resolving issues in the interests of ensuring peace and stability in the Kyrgyz and Tajik lands, ”he was quoted by the AKIpress agency.

Yatimov noted that the parties have no claims to each other for a long historical period, and politicians must resolve issues so that the two peoples can live in peace and friendship.

“We made a decision to completely stop all shooting and withdraw military formations,” he stressed, adding that a four-point protocol was adopted.

Peace will come from today in the border areas, the representative of Kyrgyzstan summed up.

The conflict between local residents in the area of ​​the Golovnoy water distribution point, whose ownership is disputed by Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, escalated into clashes on one of the sections of the border on April 29.

By the evening of the same day, the parties agreed on a ceasefire, undertaking the obligation to withdraw forces to the places of their previous deployment. However, on April 30, the shooting resumed at the border. Tajik security forces fired at the village of Kyzyl-Bel in the area bordering Kyrgyzstan. Later it was reported that the parties decided to withdraw troops from the state border line.

President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Japarov and head of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon agreed to resolve the conflict on the border of the two states peacefully, negotiations began on the delimitation and demarcation of the state border.

The Kremlin and the Russian Foreign Ministry welcomed the ceasefire decision on the Kyrgyz-Tajik border.

On May 1 and 2, Kyrgyzstan declared days of national mourning for those killed during the shootout, the corresponding decree was approved by the President of the Republic Sadyr Japarov.
