Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga announced that he was going to continue the policy of continuity in relation to Russia, including on the issue of concluding a peace treaty.
“We have no changes in attaching great importance to relations with Russia,” he said. Regarding the territorial disputes around the southern Kuril Islands (in Japan they are called “northern territories”), the head of government stressed that he did not want to postpone this problem until next generations.
According to him, during telephone conversations with Russian President Vladimir Putin in September, he confirmed that the Japanese side will adhere to the agreements reached under the previous Japanese prime minister.
