The Iranian Foreign Ministry called the US strikes against Syria an aggression and violation of the country’s territorial integrity, as well as international law. This was announced on Friday, February 26, by the official representative of the Iranian Foreign Ministry Said Khatibzade.
“This attack is a continuation of the ongoing aggression <...> against the territory of Syria <...> this action by the new US government is a clear violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria,” he said in TASS.
On the same day, White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said that airstrikes in Syria were necessary to reduce the threat of further attacks. According to her, the decision to launch air strikes was discussed and “was aimed at de-escalating tension in the region.”
However, Iran reported that the US military strike on Syria increases tensions in the region and reduces the likelihood of positive changes in relations between Tehran and Washington.
On the same day, the Syrian Foreign Ministry said that the country condemns the airstrikes of American aircraft inflicted on the province of Deir ez-Zor adjacent to Iraq. The department noted that the actions of the United States violate international law and lead to an escalation of tensions in the Middle East.
According to the head of the international committee of the Federation Council, Konstantin Kosachev, the military aggression of the United States against the SAR leads to increased tension in the region and disruption of the outlined normalization of interaction between Washington and Iran in the framework of the nuclear deal.
Vladimir Dzhabarov, First Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on International Affairs, agrees with him, who believes that the airstrike inflicted on Syria by US troops could lead to an escalation in the entire region.
The actions of the United States were also condemned by the Russian Foreign Ministry. As the head of the department Sergey Lavrov noted, the American side warned the Russian military a couple of minutes before the upcoming airstrike. He also announced the intention of the Russian Federation to find out the US plans regarding the presence in the SAR. According to the minister, Moscow hears various information about the decisions not to leave the country at all, however, it cannot confirm their authenticity without interaction with Washington.
On February 25, Reuters reported that the United States launched an airstrike against a facility in Syria that may belong to the Iranian military. Later, the information about the strike was confirmed by the Pentagon.
According to The Washington Post, several people were killed in the attack. As the head of the Pentagon Lloyd Austin is sure, the blow was dealt to the Shiite group, which earlier made sorties in Iraq, including against the interests of the United States.
