HRC appealed to the Prosecutor General’s Office after the death of journalist Slavina

The Human Rights Council under the President of Russia (HRC) asked the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation to check the validity of the searches at the journalist Irina Slavina from Nizhny Novgorod before her death.

The statement was posted on the council’s website. The appeal was drawn up by the standing commission on freedom of information and the rights of journalists, as well as the standing commission on civil liberties and civic engagement of the HRC. In it, social activists called on Prosecutor General Igor Krasnov to take personal control of the investigation.

The following council members joined the statement: Alexander Sokurov, Vladimir Ryakhovsky, Svetlana Makovetskaya, Natalia Evdokimova, Tatyana Merzlyakova, Igor Yurgens, Konstantin Mikhailov, Igor Kalyapin and Yuri Kostanov.

“The tragedy that led to the death of Irina Slavina must be investigated by the Federal Investigative Committee. We believe that it is necessary to check the validity of the search at Slavina’s house on the eve of her death, ”the HRC said.

They demanded to study the actions of the security forces for the presence of compositions in them under the articles of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation “Exceeding official powers” and “Driving to suicide”.
