The federal government will pay for testing costs for tourists entering Germany from high-risk countries.

For those returning to Germany, coronavirus tests will be paid from the federal treasury. A health ministry spokeswoman said the costs would be covered by increased subsidies to government health insurance companies. The corresponding decree should come into force this week.

Federal Minister of Health Jens Spahn plans to make tests mandatory for all people entering the country from high-risk regions. High-risk regions are countries in which a large number of new cases of infection have recently been identified.

The ordinance is due to take effect next week. From what day the obligation will be effective, the ministry will inform later.
