The inhabitants of the Austrian town of Fucking have decided to rename their village “Fugging” in the hope of escaping the overwhelming interest of Internet users, according to the city council report released on Thursday.
“The city council has decided to rename Fucking to Fugging as of January 1, 2021”, wrote in this document dated Monday Andrea Holzner, the conservative mayor of Tarsdorf, municipality to which Fucking, in Upper Austria, is attached to 350 km east of Vienna, where a hundred souls live.
For many years, onlookers had come to be photographed in front of the road signs of the locality synonymous with insult in English, sometimes in scabrous positions, in order to feed social networks with naughty puns.
In the past, there had been no clear majority to change the name, with residents near the entrance sign being in favor, while others opposed.
