During his visit to Lithuania, Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto met on Saturday, August 29, with Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, who was running for the presidency of Belarus. The head of the Finnish Foreign Ministry himself said this in Twitter

“I also met with the opposition presidential candidate of Belarus Svetlana Tikhanovskaya. The Belarusian opposition seeks to establish a dialogue with the government of the country, ”he wrote.

Haavisto also held a meeting in Vilnius with his Lithuanian counterpart Linas Linkevičius. In particular, they discussed “the importance of cooperation between the Nordic and Baltic countries”.

Earlier on Saturday, Tikhanovskaya said Russia could become a mediator in internal negotiations in Belarus.

On August 9, presidential elections were held in the republic, in which, according to official data, the incumbent head of state Alexander Lukashenko won, gaining more than 80% of the vote. After that, people who disagreed with the voting results took to the streets, and some enterprises, including the country’s largest production facilities, went on strike. Lukashenko, in turn, ordered to close the striking factories.
