Portugal launched its Covid-19 tracking application on Tuesday to warn people who have recently passed someone who tested positive for COVID-19, the government announced on Tuesday.

Downloading this application is “a civic duty”, Prime Minister Antonio Costa said.

The application called “stayaway covid”, which is “voluntary, confidential and safe”, constitutes “a precious help” for the health authorities, underlined Marta Temido, Minister of Health.

The app uses Bluetooth technology, which allows two electronic devices to communicate at short distances, to trace contacts that a person who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 would have had.

This application must allow its users to be warned if they have recently crossed paths with another user who tested positive for more than 15 minutes.

Tracking apps, seen as essential in tackling the spread of COVID-19, have been launched in many countries, with mixed results.

The Portuguese government announced last week that it will preventively raise, from September 15, the alert level to fight the COVID-19 pandemic, with new measures to be unveiled soon.
