Germany, which has closed its bars, restaurants and many public facilities for a month, is experiencing “first signs” of an improvement in the curve of infections with the new coronavirus, the Robert Koch health watch institute said Thursday.
“The curve is flattening,” Institute director Lothar Wieler said at a press conference, welcoming “early signs” of improvement on the pandemic front.
Restrictive measures, such as the closure of bars and restaurants, the obligation to wear a mask or the strict restrictions on private meetings, “show that we are not powerless” in the face of the Covid-19 epidemic, argued Mr. Wieler.
The situation remains “very serious” with nearly 22,000 new cases officially recorded in the last 24 hours, however warned the director of the Robert Koch institute.
“We must prevent the situation from deteriorating (…) Our goal is to bring infections back to a level that our health system can cope with,” he added.
