Different Types of Fences

There are many factors to consider when deciding whether or not to put up a fence. While most people view fences as an effective way to keep animals and strangers out of their backyards, a good fence can do so much more. Your enjoyment of the final product can be affected by the type of fence you choose. It is important to think about what the fence will be used for.

Chain link fences can be either coated with colored plastic or finished in straight metal. Chain link fences are the most affordable and can be purchased in different gauges (or thicknesses) to ensure a variation between price and durability. A chain-link fence can double as a garden fence, which can enhance its aesthetic appeal. Imagine your wire fences covered in lavender, passion flowers, or wisteria.

There are four main types of wooden fences that can be branched to add a personal touch. There are four main styles: privacy, semi-privacy, split-rail, and picket.

Privacy Fencing

Privacy fencing is a series of boards that are stacked on top of each other to prevent outsiders from entering your yard. This is especially useful if you don’t want anyone to disturb your yard. You can create a unique look by adding a lattice design to the top of your privacy fencing or cutting between the posts an elongated U-shaped pattern that runs along the top of the boards.

Semi-privacy Fencing

Semi-privacy fencing allows for a small gap between the boards, usually about one to three inches. This allows animals and people to see through but prevents anyone from getting in. Semi-privacy fencing allows wind to pass between boards without applying pressure. Staggering boards on either side of the main supports allow the wind to continue through but make it harder for animals and people to see through.

Split-rail Fencing

Split-rail fencing is a common type of fence used throughout the world. It is often used as horse fencing to corral horses and cattle. This fence consists of several vertical posts that are evenly spaced and two to three horizontal boards or logs running between them. Although this type of fence won’t deter animals or people from entering your yard, it can give your home an authentic “country” feel.

Picket Fencing

Picket fencing was originally one of the most common types of fencing. This is similar to semi-privacy fencing, except that the boards are tapered or pointed at their top. A white picket fence remains the standard vision of suburban middle-class life in America.

Other Types of Fencing

We cannot possibly describe all the styles of iron, concrete, and stonework. Many people’s favorite aspect is the resemblance of stone fencing to a medieval castle. Concrete fencing is easier to install but doesn’t provide the same feeling. Wrought iron fencing is very costly, but it can be absolutely stunning. Wrought iron fencing can be used to support many types of climbing vines.

When choosing a fence, it is important to consider your personal style and preferences. Does it matter if someone can not see through the fence? What do you prefer? Vinyl, metal, or wood? How high will the finished product be? What amount of time, effort, and money will you be able to spend on maintaining the fence? Some fences are more susceptible to graffiti. These questions will help you choose the right product for you.
