At the end of 2020, the number of deaths in Germany significantly exceeded the figures recorded in previous years. So in the week before Christmas, the national average recorded deaths 24 percent higher than the average, reported the Federal Statistical Office. In Saxony, where the situation is developing most dramatically, the death toll has doubled.

During the week of December 14-20, at least 23,550 people died – 4,568 more than the average for the period from 2016 to 2019. The week before, the number of deaths was 25 percent above the average. “The number of deaths of patients who were previously diagnosed with Covid-19 through a test has been increasing week after week since the beginning of October,” experts from the Federal Statistical Office said. During the 51st calendar week, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) recorded 4,484 deaths from Covid-19.
