Domingo Alves, professor at the University of São Paulo School of Medicine, said the coronavirus pandemic in Brazil remains outside the control of the authorities. This situation turns the country into a giant “laboratory” for the breeding of new strains of COVID-19.
According to the specialist, there is a “perfect storm” in Brazil, since along with the high level of infection, there is no sanitary control. The list of new strains is just the tip of the iceberg.
Alves also stressed that there is a particular danger of the Amazonian strain, which was first discovered in the city of Manaus. Brazil is now experiencing a “script rollback”. And now more and more young people, including pregnant women, are at risk.
The identification of new strains is sporadic, Alves said. Another risk factor is the emergence of new strains during the campaign to vaccinate the population. When the virus contacts the vaccinated, biological pressure is created. It leads to further mutations of the already mutated virus.
On May 3, 28,935 new cases of coronavirus were recorded in Brazil. The total number in the country has reached 14,754,910.
