The Chinese embassy posted a vitriolic message against Canada on its website on Tuesday the day after the almost unanimous vote in parliament recognizing that a “genocide” is taking place in China against Uyghur Muslims.

The vote on the Conservative motion also included an amendment asking the government to pressure the International Olympic Committee to relocate the Beijing Winter Games, scheduled for 2022.

“The majority of Canadian MPs who support the above motion have never been to Xinjiang or even China. Note that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his cabinet, with the exception of Minister of Foreign Affairs Marc Garneau, did not stand for the vote. Mr. Garneau abstained.

This vote in parliament has worsened relations with China, strained since the arrest in Vancouver of Meng Wanzhou, the chief financial officer of Chinese telecoms giant Huawei, at the request of the United States in 2018.

China responded by arresting two Canadians, Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor. Still detained, they are accused of espionage in China.
