Between Leningrad and Moscow: when it gets warmer in the capital regions

The beginning of May in the Moscow and Leningrad regions will become colder than the climatic norm by two to three degrees. The month will begin with snow, but it will end with real spring warmth, forecasters say. What kind of weather awaits us on the long weekend, Izvestia found out with the help of the employees of the Hydrometeorological Center and the Phobos Center.

In the Moscow region, as in the Leningrad region, the first ten-day week in May is likely to be anomalous – two to three degrees below the climatic norm, Dmitry Kiktev, deputy director of the Hydrometeorological Center of Russia, told Izvestia. In the Moscow region, the average monthly rate is 13.2 degrees Celsius, in the Leningrad region – 10.9 ℃.

It will be cool in the Moscow region in the first days of May due to the influence of the Baltic cyclone. It is with him that the next portion of precipitation will be associated: rain and snow. In other words, the weather for the first May is not quite holiday and festive, notes Kiktev. Perhaps it would be more correct to stay at home. In the Moscow region, temperatures on some days of the first decade can drop below zero at night. Snowfall is quite possible at these temperatures; in any case, frost can be predicted with a high degree of probability.

The beginning of May can be slightly depressing and will be distinguished by mildly positive temperatures. On the night of May 1, it will rain, in places heavy. The temperature in the city during the day will be +5 … + 7, in the region – +3 … + 8 Celsius. On the night of May 2, it will be –1 … +4 degrees. In other words, slight frosts are possible in some places. During the day, the temperature is +9 … + 14, mostly without precipitation. “It will be a rainless window,” said the meteorologist. Cloudy and rain are possible on May 3. Night temperature – +1 … + 6, in the afternoon – +8 … + 13 degrees.

The forecaster reassured summer residents and lovers of active tourism that lightning and thunderstorms are unlikely due to the low warming up of the atmosphere. The wind on May 1 will reach a speed of 7–12 m / s (at night on May Day up to 18 m / s); May 3 – 8-13 m / s.

But do not be discouraged – with the increase in the length of the day and the warming up of the air, a slow warming will begin, says the deputy director of the Hydrometeorological Center.

We are expecting another cyclonic attack from 3 to 4 May, says Vadim Zavodchenkov, specialist in long-term weather forecasts at the Phobos center. During the day, the temperature can rise to +12 … + 17 degrees. On May 4, a collapse of cold is possible: at night +1 … + 6, in the afternoon – +5 … + 10. On the night of the 4th in some parts of Central Russia, precipitation can turn into snow, Zavodchenkov warned. On May 5, there will be a short-term improvement in the weather – in the daytime the air will warm up to +8 … + 13 degrees, although on the night of the 5th, frosts up to -3 degrees are possible.

The subsequent period from 6 to 10 May in the Moscow region is more or less homogeneous. It will pass under the influence of a cyclonic vortex from the south and southwest. “Already these days we can talk about a change in the weather trend and about a stable course towards warming the weather,” said a specialist at the Phobos center.

Although, added the forecaster, on May 6-7, rain is possible at daytime temperatures up to 14 degrees (at night – within 7 degrees). At the same time, on May 8-10, the rains will have only a local character (night – +2 … + 7, during the day there is more sun and thermometer readings will rise to +12 … + 17 degrees).

“But this is not the limit, since on the last day of the long holidays, May 10, the daytime temperatures are likely to jump up to 20 degrees Celsius! We started the decade with snow, and we will finish it with 20-degree warmth, ”Zavodchenkov summed up.

Leningrad rock and roll

In the northern capital, it will get warmer compared to April: due to the fact that the sun will peep more often and the cold air mass, which is now located over the Leningrad region and St. Petersburg, will gradually leave, the chief forecaster of the Hydrometeorological Center in St. Petersburg Alexander Kolesov. Most likely, there will be no precipitation in the form of snow such as it was in the second half of April. The St. Petersburg meteorologist expressed hope that the air temperature on the first holidays will be able to reach +10 … + 12 degrees Celsius.

In the first days of the decade, night temperatures will remain rather low: in the region until frost -2 … + 3, in St. Petersburg itself – about zero. Precipitation is not expected, at least the same as it was at the end of April. The exit of the southern cyclone is coming, which is why it may rain from May 3 to 4, Alexander Kolesov predicts. In the future, forecasters hope that warmer weather will be established, up to +10 … + 15 degrees, although with the influence of cyclones, individual short-term rains are quite likely.

– On May 1, in the Leningrad region, as well as in the Moscow region, one should expect slightly positive temperatures: at night no more than 3 degrees, during the day – 7-10 heat, – admits the deputy director of the Hydrometeorological Center of Russia Dmitry Kiktev. – On May 2 at night it is one degree warmer, and during the day the temperature will be about 10-12 degrees. May 3 night – 2–4 heat, day – +7 … + 9. After the first May, temperatures may rise slowly.

On May 3-4, the weather will deteriorate for a short time, it will rain, says Vadim Zavodchenkov, an expert on long-term weather forecasts at the Phobos center. “At night it will get warmer up to +1 … + 6, in the daytime the temperature will drop to +6 … + 11 degrees,” Zavodchenkov said.

– From 5 to 8 May, the period of improving weather – possibly up to +13 degrees. Although at night, slight frosts are likely, – suggests the forecaster of the Phobos center. – This improvement is quite long in its period. At the same time, the precipitation period should be expected on May 8-10. At night these days, the temperature will reach 8 degrees Celsius, in the daytime – up to 14. And only by the very end of the decade, the temperature regime will fully approach the level of the climatic norm in the northwest.

Weather forecasters do not expect hurricane events in the first ten days of May in the Leningrad Region. Gradually these days the north wind weakens and turns to the western directions with an outlet to the eastern directions. Winds of more than 20 m / s are not expected, says Alexander Kolesov, chief forecaster of St. Petersburg. However, with the passage of the cyclone, which moves through the Novgorod region and the south of the Leningrad region, the wind is likely to increase up to 9-14 m / s, he notes. There will be no thunderstorms in the first half of the holidays, as long as the cold air mass lasts. However, then, due to the arrival of a warm air mass and the influence of cyclones of the first May decade, thunderstorms are likely to be thunderstorms, concluded Alexander Kolesov.
