Experts will develop predictive models for the development of situations during a flood-hazardous period on the Lena River in Yakutia during the Emergency DataHack online hackathon of the EMERCOM of Russia, which will be held from 28 to 30 May.

The event will bring together teams of data analysts, geographers and hydrologists, and machine learning specialists. This was announced on Thursday, April 22, by TASS with reference to the representative of the expert commission of the competition, leading researcher of the Permafrost Institute of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the North-Eastern Federal University, candidate of geographical sciences Nikita Tananaev.

According to him, the model developed during the online hackathon will allow 10 days in advance to assess the likelihood of the Lena River opening and the occurrence of a blockage in the river section.

“Another task is to create a predictive model that will allow to estimate the maximum water level in certain sections of the Lena River within 30 days in advance,” the scientist added.

The hackathon is organized by the Russian Emergencies Ministry in cooperation with the Research Data Infrastructure (INID) project. It is noted that as part of an online competition, the ministry will for the first time provide access to some of the data that is collected to prevent emergencies. Based on this information, participants in the online hackathon will build their machine learning models.

The best solutions will be implemented in the work of the Ministry of Emergencies. Participants of the hackathon will also have the opportunity to work with data provided by the partners of the event: Roshydromet, Rosavtodor, GLONASS BDD, Tele2, Rostelecom. The total prize fund of the hackathon is 900 thousand rubles.

At the end of March, Russian President Vladimir Putin, after reports on the readiness of the regions for floods and wildfires, said that the country should be ready for any development of events. The head of the Ministry of Emergency Situations Evgeny Zinichev noted at the same time that the department carries out raid inspections of territories, settlements, gardening associations, as well as children’s camps bordering forestry.
