In Armenia, it is necessary to form a government of national unity, hold new elections and a referendum on changing the constitution. Armenian President Armen Sarkissian stated this during a meeting with representatives of the Russian Armenian community during a private visit to the Russian Federation, the politician’s website said on November 29.

“In any country where such a big tragedy has happened, there is a solution – the government that led to this must leave,” he said, commenting on the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh. According to him, if a politician is strong, he will then return to power.

As he believes, the new government of national unity should work six months or a year before the new elections, based on their results the new cabinet of ministers will form a political force that will receive a mandate from voters.

Before the new elections, a referendum must be held to amend the country’s constitution, Sargsyan stressed.

Sargsyan’s visit to Moscow began the day before.

A new round of the conflict between Baku and Yerevan in Karabakh took place on September 27. The parties blamed each other for the incident.

On November 9, Armenia and Azerbaijan, with the mediation of the Russian Federation, agreed to end hostilities. According to the agreement, the military of Armenia and Azerbaijan remained in their already occupied positions. At the same time, Yerevan pledged to transfer control over the Aghdam, Kelbajar and Lachin regions to Baku, and Russian peacekeepers are stationed along the line of contact and the Lachin corridor connecting Karabakh with Armenia.

The country’s opposition accused Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan of capitulation and betrayal of the people.
