Airspace control in the Arctic was strengthened with 1L119 “Sky-SVU” radars. Sources in the military department told Izvestia about the decision to strengthen air defense capabilities in the Arctic.

To create a continuous radar shield in the region, the 45th Army of the Air Force and Air Defense of the Northern Fleet included units equipped with the latest Sky-SVU radar.

Unlike the Sky-M radar stations recently supplied to the Northern Fleet, the new complex operates only at meter wavelengths, and is more compact and mobile. It is designed to detect cruise missiles, drones, stealth aircraft and hypersonic targets. Also “Nebu-SVU” can be quickly transferred by aircraft or ships to any point of the Northern Sea Route (NSR).

“Placing these radars in the Arctic is an important and timely decision. Our northern direction remained open in the 1990s. It was necessary to build up the radar coverage. “Sky-SVU” is a necessary system for detecting air targets and warning of a missile attack, “ex-head of the anti-aircraft missile forces of the Russian Air Force, Alexander Gorkov, told Izvestia.

The technical characteristics of the complexes allow them to detect targets the size of a fighter at a distance of 360 km. In this case, the distance to them is determined with an accuracy of 100 m.
