Eight family members were shot dead in a mosque in eastern Afghanistan on Saturday evening, local officials said on Sunday.

Five brothers and three of their cousins were killed “in the mosque at 9 p.m., during evening prayers in district 9 of the city of Jalalabad”, explained on Facebook Zaiulhaq Amarkhil, governor of Nangarhar province where the incident has taken place.

“An investigation is underway, but according to preliminary information, a land dispute is at the origin of the incident,” he told AFP.

Fareed Khan, a spokesperson for the Nangarhar police force confirmed the facts.

The incident comes during the month of Ramadan, when men gather every evening at the mosque to pray after fasting all day.

Revenge killings are common in Afghanistan, in accordance with a code of honor that prompts many men to commit violent acts, sometimes decades after the affront, to avenge a loved one.
