Kabul | At least 30 people have died in flash floods caused by heavy rain overnight in the town of Charikar, north of Kabul, the Afghan government said on Wednesday.

At least 20 people were injured and more than 300 houses were also destroyed. A hospital in Parwan province said it received the bodies of 17 people who died.

Many children are among those who died, the emergency management ministry said.

Flood disasters are frequent in the country, especially in poor rural areas, where many fragile houses collapse during heavy rains.

At least 15 children and a woman died in a flash flood several weeks ago in a village in eastern Nangarhar province.
